Early MOT; what happens if it fails? #1347741

My MOT expires on the 1st of July.

I'd like to get it tested during June to allow me some time to get any failure items fixed and so that I can plan what I want to do with the car (whether to fix the roof lacquer this month or wait etc)

If I have an MOT carried out in June and it fails, will I be able to use the car until the expiry date or will I have to take the car off the road until it's all fixed?

you can carry on using it up until the expiry date of the original mot, however if you take it back after a couple of weeks the garage will likely charge you for a full mot again and retest everything as oppose to the things it failed on

If it fails you have demonstrated your car not to be road worthy.

I'd advise against using it in that scenario until you have rectified the faults and had a re-test. I believe there to be a clause about the car being roadworthy in most insurance policies.

What you could do is take the car in and ask for a pretest examination/advice.

An interesting point upon which the DVLA site does not really enlighten.

There are two possible offenses: driving without a valid MOT certificate and driving a defective vehicle. It would seem that you will still have a valid MOT, but if it's failed you will ipso facto be driving a defective vehicle.

So I wouldn't.

Well another example of the DVLA achieving the opposite of what they set out to.

If I was able to MOT and carry on driving then it would likely be fixed within a week or two but now I'll have to wait until it expires as I can't be without a car until its booked in for any work.

If it is defective then it will still be defective, I just won't know about it and it will be an extra 2 weeks on the road in its current condition.

Well done DVLA on making the roads safer.

some garages will charage you £20 (or half the price of the mot) for a pre mot. they wont put it through the systems machine but will write down if any faults are found.
Ive done it a few times in my past, rather than put it through and have 2 weeks to get it done.
