Bloody lucky you where going slow.

Have they been refurbed ie powder coated? I always wonder if the baking process weakens the alloy?

Would be good to find out why it failed.

I hope there's not too much damage.

Stan - I think we need a prominent sticky in a couple of places - I reckon I've seen half a dozen failed wheels now - all bar one had been re-furbed

I'm beginning to wonder if this is a manifold-type issue all over again for Fiat? Wheels should *not* be failing so catastrophically, with potentially fatal consequences, even given their age, surely?

Of course it is going to be easy to argue that we have no way of knowing if these wheels have ever been kerbed/potholed etc and that has led to the failures but it is worrying to see, especially if this is becoming a more common issue.

I've suggested the sticky idea to the board, obviously one of the current stickies will have to be dropped to make room, but we can look at that, assuming the board go with the proposal.

Thanks,

Stan

I wonder if the wheel just hit its cyclic limit?

Seen a few on scrap heaps. Never seen the 16v wheel do it - it has a lot more meat on it, of course (as well as looking better!).

Was that the same wheel that you had the wheel bolts go loose on and vibration through?

Connected?

How do people check though - the solution is presumably some sort of NDE (unless they have obviously visible cracks) or swapping for aftermarket?

ooo now also worried about my powder coated wheels!! They're plus ones mind, but still I've always been a little uncomfortable with the thought of my wheels getting up to 180 degrees but my friend ( who's business is wheel refurbs) insists its perfectly safe . . . crazy

Back into retirement, for now at least . . . Broomy will come out to play next year smile

The funny thing is, less than 6 months ago I kerbed the wheel and got it refurbed! thinking this could be the cause!?

any way I could tell if the problem was down to them?

Are you shitting me??? Photo???
I think you should get your front suspension checked over to make sure there is nothing way off with the geometry. Are there alot of pot holes where you live? twice - that cant be a coincidence surely . Did you get all the wheels refurbed before? or just the passenger one?

No, it's more likely the ridiculously *bad* click to enlarge that practically tear the suspension off at more than crawling speed. But there are bad potholes to contend with too, idiots who park so that you can't manoeuvre around the worst ones, etc., etc. judge Councils are effing things up royally, in these financially challenging times. It's not as though we motorists aren't paying through the nose all the time. cry

Surely the common factor here is refurbing - some wheels may have been subjected to a temperature at which the structure of the metal is compromised, at which point, some serious abuse from road defects is enough to cause the failure

Bear in mind that it's not just standard wheels - I had my ProRace 1s refurbed and over the following couple of years, I cracked the inside rim on three of them - nothing as bad as these failures admittedly, but an indication that some cast wheels aren't as tough as we would like.
