Just wondering what if anything you thought of the recent Microsoft and Nokia announcement.

http://www.theverge.com/2012/6/21/3105359/nokia-kevin-shields-lumia-interview-windows-phone-upgrades

Certainly seems to me that Microsoft will not be the saviour that Nokia were hoping to stop it shutting down.

No but I have the Nokia N9 with the last Nokia Homegrown OS (MeGo Harrmatan). It is superb and could have saved the company IMHO, Eleson has just sold the company down the river. As usual the updates to OS are too long in the pipeline and then you get the likes of Vodafone holding them up still further.

Apple have their OS upgrade policy honed to perfection, they announce it, it is available for all users. No faffing.

John, do you still have the 900, still happy with it?

I am starting to look for the N8 replacement. There is no way I would go Lumia, I just hate the look and feel of the windows mobile platform frown

The Lumia 900 has been discounted again now as Nokia look to create a revenue stream.

I would stay away from the 900 its dead in the water already.

Come come John. No space for Apple bashing.

Bob. I replaced my N900 with the N9. It is the same form factor as the lumia 900 but runs Nokias MeGo operating system, which is fantastic (and similar to WebOS) but was aborted a couple fo weeks after the N9 release.

It is however the best phone I have owned, just lack apps, which is not a problem for me as the web browser is so good i can doo all the things I would need apps for anyway.

What bashing. I have even been complementary about Apple in this thread crazy

If i were in the market now I would probably go down the Android route. The S3 looks very nice, but i would worry about leaving it in my back pocket and sitting on it as it is very thin.

Nokia are now as good as dead. Windows 7 is not catching on and even if Windows Phoen 8 looks good the Lumia 900 is not upgradeable.
Their hwole strategy is pinned in MS and that is not a good thing. Symbian is dead too now and Belle was probably the last major update.

Shame to see such a big firm go under so quickly.

It looks as though MeeGo will continue to see development via a new startup, comprising ex-Nokia employees, called Jolla. Nokia have gifted them the MeeGo patents only 6 days ago.

That is great news and a shame Nokia are getting out though.

Sorry I did mean the N9 not 900 blush

And why must we not bash Apple?

For non techie types and those who want functionality "OUT OF THE BOX", i products are fantastic.

If you migrate to a complete i lifesyle with Imac, Ipad, Iphone etc then all your devices will sync perfectly and it will be i-topia. This choice won't be cheap though and you WILL have to settle for a lot of compromises, including signing up to a non EU based contract ooo

For me, buying an i product would be akin to buying a volvo in the 80's. They were generally reasonable cars. They were reliable, safe and did exactly what you would expect of them. It all sounds great but how many of us really WANTED a volvo when there were 205 Gti's, Golf Gti's, Lancia delta's, Cosworths and Audi Quattro's being made?

I may be getting old but I STILL don't want a volvo...... or an iphone

I can think of several significant events that changed my life, none of them involved a new mobile. Although I haven't got, and never will get, an iPhone. wink

I did have a wee chuckle when the latest "Fortune Global 500" list was released. The company which MAKES all the apple products, ranked 43rd in Revenue but only the 66th most profitable.

Meanwhile Apple, who just take the products and sell them on, ranked 55th for revenues, but are the 7th most profitable company on the planet. Beaten ONLY by gas and oil companies and 2 chinese banks.

They made more profit than BP, despite only making a third of it's revenue!

You are welcome to continue paying the 'Apple tax' if you wish.

Apple to me is like is a bit like Sky, they are for people who are too lazy to research better value alternatives, and these people end up lining the pockets of these corporations who then have so much power and influence that they stifle competition and crush opponents.

Oh sorry, I seem to have gone off topic, oops shocked

Everyone is entitled to their opinion. You missed the point of the products and there uses.

In certain area's Apple can leverage integration of Hardware, Firmware and Software to produce some very good products.

In some area's forcing markets to change. The phone industry is the easiet to point to. We wouldn't be where we are now if it wasn't for the iPhone and Apple's control of the telco's.

In some area's there is no need or sense for such integration and off the shelf parts will suffice.

Why would you chuckle?

Because your comparison makes absolutely no sense? And uses the simple logic of an infant?

Well two of my colleagues have Lumias and I have been playing. Whilst they look smart and run rather quick I am finding them so frustrating. They actually seem like a clear backward step to some of the old Nokia symbians crazy

You can't file share over bluetooth.
There is no USB input so you can't read USB sticks.
There is no HDMI out support.
There is only one charging option (Micro USB)
You can't speak to it from a PC, unless you have zoom.
You can't upload pics to a PC, unless you have zoom.
You can't add music files unless you have Zoom.

It seems like ZOOM is the itunes for wondoze phones rolleyes Oh but you can upload your pics and files to your cloud though.

Hang on Bob, why would you want to plug a USB stick into the side of a phone?
