Looking to go on holiday in August, nothing to strenuous, a week away in the sun.

Now, anyone have any good recommendations for a week beach style holiday, that doesn't cost the earth in the school summer holiday period?

Rhodes is always nice this time of year, an all inclusive will be really cheap at the moment too.

Coopless!

Id recommend Portugal. I've been to Carvoeiro a number of times and it's very nice. It does get hot there, more so in August. The people are very friendly, great sandy beaches and the food is good.

Icemeler, Turkey - much cheaper than anywhere in the Euro zone once you get there, lovely area, not much more than a pound a pint...

Another vote for Turkey and several for Greece smile
I prefer Greece (especially islands in the Ionian Sea).
The bad thing is that in August in both places is very hot (40 degrees).
I'll put a few pictures (of Sithonia) taken in the first days of May this year.

Marmaris Turkey.

1 week for a couple about £600 self catering and you can eat a 3 course meal for £6, beer is around £2 a pint.
Beautiful harbor, 600 shops in the indoor market.

Another vote for Turkey.

We're returning there this year - Olu Deniz.

Cheap as chips once you're there.

I meant to say, NOT Turkey, as I've been several times and my other halfs father lives there, so she has too!

Portugal heads the list, followed by a nice peaceful Greek island...

Any recommendations for either of those destinations welcomed smile

I've only been to Carvoeiro in Portugal as a mates parents have a villa out there. Albufiera has the night club scene, but generally most of the small costal towns / villages will be very nice, with carying levels of English speaking communities. Carviero has become more modernised in the past 10 years to accomodate the villas / golf course, so the beach area has restaurants and bars very close by. Almost everyone speaks English there.

That said a very short drive from Carvoeiro centre will take you to a variety of less popular and very beautiful beaches . I forgot to mention that the good food there is generally very reasonably priced, which is always a welcome bonus when you're abroad.

If you decide to go more remote the locals will almost certainly be accomodating, even if they don't speak English, which usually results in lots of arm waving and pointing to order food. I'm sure they'll find it just as amusing as your wife / kid(s).

Greek islands got a bit expensive, but maybe they're more in line with Turkey now the Euro crisis has kicked off.

The ones I liked most were Ios and Santorini.

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone, and as much as I'd like to boost the economy here at home, I overlooked sunny Skeggy in favour of a week in Lagos, Portugal. Private complex of 12 apartments, swimming pool and a communal BBQ. And about 500m from the beach and centre of town too.

Chris - I did look at Corviero (sp?) but felt Lagos offered more options in terms of eating out. But thanks for sowing the Portugal seed in my head thumb

Off August 12th, my escape from the rain can't come soon enough smile
