Im with Sky. It's very s l o w. I did a test and it was 0.67mb, with a national average of 17mb! Who should I change to? Should I wait for fibre optic?

if things don't change they'll stay the same

I'm with Sky too and my download speed has been slowing down for the past 6 months. I've gone from 2.7Mbps to 1.2Mbps.

I spoke to Sky and the answer was 'tuff'

I'm now in the process of switching to BT Infinity.

Ive just moved from virgin to sky as I was getting speeds of 0.40 on a 10mb service . They stated that the area has high utilisation and have to wait nearly three months for a repair. Keep paying your bills and try and claim it back after the repair has been made. Worst customer service ever.. if going to a cable service maybe time to start trying bt

Sorry im a little late here smile As this is my specialised area.

Forget national average your general downstream speed is defined by the target SNR set within the attenuation of the line, this based openreach circuits adsl/adsl2& adsl2+ circuits over a **copper** pair from the exchange to your nte your main socket.

The attenuation of the line is a calculation made from lenght of pair and gauge of metalic path this has the biggest impact on speed.

However on the above circuits 95% of them are not set up for adsl as years ago it didnt exist. In the industry it was called star wiring which for a pstn dc voltage capaictor setup was fine ** now broadband has changed all that**.

In the uk we lack behind in general broadband speeds due to we were more advanced before as a pstn/dacs.

As for virgin what they offer is a FTTC product which is only co-ax in to your premises not the full fibre product as advertised shock along with this people that fit and repair this without minimal understanding or technical ability along with self employment paid per job.

As bezzer has mentioned BT infinty is openreachs role out of the fibre to the cab ie the FTTC, we will also offer the FTTP product which would be a fibre directly into your premises which would mean no more pstn service only voip.

Would the FTTP product take us to no1 (maybe up there buisness users) for residential the future will be a secure wireless network which openreach better start looking at!

Your internal wiring config will affect your connection 100% unless is a proper nte2000 or ssfp setup. Even if you plug your router in to your nte **test port** and notice no speed increase your profile may be capped so wouls req removal from your cp.

** some of openreach network contains ali lol **

** You current setup will not be optimum for any dsl product
**

** The nte test port will only work if wired correcty **
A decent site for questions on your adsl connections http://www.kitz.co.uk/ it has good info the tech side is a little basic

I have helped a few guys off here feel free to drop a pm about your dsl connection to me. smile

An exposition upon the factors affecting your upload and download speeds over an xDSL broadband connection, I believe.

Start by changing the broadband filter that the router / phone plug into. Be sure no phones are plugged straight into the wall socket without a filter.

locate the master socket, take off the face plate and plug the filter directly into the test socket behind this plate.

try and do this at a loud time of the day (rush hours) and then call sky asking for a line test. if you are into playing games online (ps3 etc) then also ask for a gaming profile.

I went from a wimpy 2mb speed to 8.9mb

For playing online gaming 3mbps down is more than enough.

online gaming responds better with faster latency rather than speed !

I was suggesting that if they wanted to play more online gaming then ask for the gamer profile. As you say online gaming isn't to do with speed, its the ping/delay time. With regards to the actual speed try the test socket and ask for another line test because it worked for me. My line attenuation is 39 and my noise margin 6.4... Download was 9 but went to 8 with the gamer profile.

Happy with mine for now.... Until infinity arrives in my area
