Finally put the money down and got one of these for Anita to play with.

Reasonably impressed as a device for eating things you can buy from the google play store; skype seems to work in landscape and portrait mode (after some confusion trying to get the password correct!) and the hotmail application delivers (eventually) her mail.

Haven't worked out how to remove my gmail account details, but as all that's in there is about five hundred 'your pizza is on the way' messages.

Would very much like to remove the 'recommendations' which appear when it turns on - I *hate* being recommended...

And now I need to find some patience card games - in particular one called 'grandfather' (not 'grandfather clock') which I found on a windows box years ago.

Hey ho.

The well known purveyor of half truths suggests that it came from Kdegames.,

Or theft of IP perhaps?

There's a couple of folk here that have them, and they are quite nice. The screen is nowhere near as good as my iPad (new? 3? Whatever the hell it's called!!), but it's pretty good. I quite like the size though. I just don't find android as intuitive as ios, but maybe that's cos I am old innit.

Sadly not, as there are numerous examples of tablet devices with curved edges and rectangular screens dating back 10 or 20 years in the media, long before Apple secured an incredibly loose patent on the idea.

Treating Apple like their 'inventors of the tablet' and then charging everyone else with a similar design, would be like treating IBM as the 'inventors of the PC' or Nintendo as the 'inventors of the console'. They didnt come up with the idea, they just made a commercially acceptable version.

Sadly so.

That is not the basis of the issues at hand, merely a part of it.

Nobody is treating Apple as the inventors of the tablet. There are key points and elements to these cases.

£5 not awarded. Where there is a case it must be answered. Regardless of who is involved, in the patent situation the patent needs to be proved first before it can then be applied to the defendant. FUD, media manipulation and dis-information don't hide that. Some places may fall for it. The UK for example but the results are racking up across the world.

Pete - KDEGames indeed it was. The windows version was written by (ahem) me, as an exercise in how to use C++ to write a card game in Windows.

So now I use the damn thing in Linux under the wine emulator... go figure!

I guess I'll have to find out how to write Android applications.

MrB - I don't find it intuitive at all. I really really dislike single full-screen applications; it's not the way I work. I don't like fake 'inertia' and other visual effects. I don't like the way patience card games seem to 'need' to have permission to read your address book or to access the internet. I don't like the way installing aldiko book reader and then removing it to use kobo instead still links aldiko when you try an open a browsed epub file. I don't like that the device won't present its entire memory to a remote USB accessor - it appears to be fairly well locked down at present but no doubt it will be hacked in short order. In particular I dislike the requirement to have or to create a gmail address before you can even complete the initialisation of the device. I very definitely don't like the fact that it tries to sell me something every time I turn the bugger on.

In short, it's everything I dislike in a device and the reason I use Linux. Nonetheless it does the primary requirement for Anita - video skype.

Apparently the permissions issue is more to do with how Google group them rather than the app needing access to any one area.

Root your tablet and get working on your java smile

Apologies for steering the thread off course Mr B

The WINE emulator issue is rather ironic wink

I would be annoyed by a few of those to say the least
