Click. It needs a new clutch... Can someone possibly save it?

That's a shockingly uninformative advert and how the seller thinks they'll get 4k minimum is beyond me.

The seller has probably only put 4K to prevent the whole car from being bid on.

Unfortunately, with the money the Coupes make these days as a whole car, we've all noticed the breaking of them happening too eagerly, as there's more money to be made frown

Shame, as a clutch costs about £400 - £500 to replace and you have a perfectly (according to advert) good Coupe back on the road.

And that, boys and girls, is why we don't have a breaking section on this forum.

Well it doesn't stop anyone from still breaking them, so how does that actually help?

It means if you are actually going to break a car you have to put some effort in.

1 advert saying '20vt breaking - all parts available' requires the minimum of time and effort. Whereas 100 seperate adverts with pics/details of EACH part for sale takes some time.

I understand that, but what I mean is, if someone wants to break a coupe, they will just put it on ebay or the gumtree. I know why the breaking section has been removed from the forum but I don't think it makes it anymore difficult to break a coupe because of it.

That's fine. The club is about keeping coupes on the road, not breaking them, and doesn't want to be seen to encouraging it.

Yes, there are coupes which are beyond economic repair; yes, there are cars which would not be running without spares from broken cars (and yes, I have parts from at least one such car on mine); yes, traders will break cars - though usually as a last resort.

Consider the club squeamish about broken coupes, in the same way that some people don't like the sight of blood but are quite happy to accept a transfusion.

what a shame frown how can anyone break a coupe because of a clutch, it doesnt really go into detail why it needs a new clutch, is it slipping or has it gone altogether or is it just a noisy release bearing. as i say thats a really shame to see someone give up so easily on a coupe

If people can't afford to own and run a Coupe on earth do they bother buying a Coupé...

One reason used to be because with just one post on the FCCUK forum they could probably make back the price they paid by breaking it grr

Fortunately this is no longer an option for them.

Because they can?

I really think this whole breaking hysteria is too little too late. No one was complaining when CarlT was hacking probably the late hundreds of them to bits, as we were all getting cheap bits for our cars, when the bits were still fetching good money. Now when there is hardly any being broken, this forum is jumping on people who choose to break them.

Coupes are being broken because of bad maintainance or bad workmanship by mechanics. We should be looking to educate anyone who comes on here, encourage people to maintain their cars at capable specialists and offering to help out each other with parts/help when needed. This is how to keep the fiat coupe alive, not bashing people.

This car will never be a classic, but we can only protect our own cars. Please let's stop this bashing of people who choose to break them.

Ross

I've got a 20v that decided to eat itself.

Not sure what to do with it, breaking is an option and it would upset me to do it.

If I could sell it for say 'A Grand' I would do, but there's not much chance of that.

Anyone who thinks breaking a coupe is easy is in for a shock though.

For a quick win I could have just ripped stuff off and posted an advert, but no-one wants to buy a dirty part do they?

I've probably spent over a hundred hours removing, cleaning, packing, advertising and selling stuff on here - and I've still got a fair few bits left to go. If you've got the time, the space, the inclination and the tools to do it then thats fair enough. Its not that been easy for me though. My coupe has been a massive part of my life in the past 10 years and I'll never forget that.

that is so true, it's a massive hassle breaking them, cleaning parts up and then all the packaging and arranging couriers, i had mine for over 5 years and didn't enjoy breaking it

I don't think there is any hysteria regarding breaking the coupé Ross confused

If people wish to break them that is their choice. I never had any issue with anyone who had reached a point where, after several years of ownership, the only option they felt was open to them was to break. Generally though these folks were well respected and trusted folks who most of us knew. They had often spent a good deal of time contributing to the Coupé community and took time to list parts properly with good quality pictures. Many of the parts being supplied just prior to the removal of the section though were not that great, some were rubbish, yes I was stung!

In recent years it was quite clear Coupés were often being bought specifically to break. The forum was offering the perfect captured audience for those folks and the quality of items being sold dropped significantly. Rather than being a forum for those loving the Fiat Coupé, FCCUK was being viewed by many as just an easy place to break them and also a place where you could esilly get ripped off.

Yes it's a little sad that genuine Coupé enthusiasts lost the oppotunity to break a pride and joy but to be fair mate there are many other places where they can. It all just requires a bit more effort.

We often hear tales of woe about buying on ebay but rest assured buying from sales on their site offers the buyer far greater protection than FCCUK ever could.

I have noticed no less than 4 Coupés being broken on ebay today. So there is plenty of choice for parts and buyers should be able to obtain competetive pricing too.

Just to clarify, I am not paranoid about the coupes being broken and started this thread thinking that someone perhaps will be able to save it. I don't think that the clutch can is a good enough reason to break a car as it is a consumable and it will need a change at some point. Fair enough it can be an expensive repair for some but come on... A cluch needs doing so instead of fixing it you'll break the whole car... Out of order!

It just seems over the last 12 months, people are jumping in and saying how bad it is. Your one of the ones I think about when I think of people moaning about it.

Your post above is well thought out and I totally agree with your thoughts and motives.

But, I still believe we should be spending more time writing how-to's and helping each other out, than moaning about people breaking them. Kelv's guide on the ICV is excellent and some of the older guides could be updated with better pictures and better wording. I'd be happy to look at amending any, as I've been using a few of the ones on their recently.

Ross,

I have done time at the top table, served twice at the moderator table, as have you, and I have also served as a club regional rep. After this weekend I will be reverting back to Club member. Like many others though that does not mean I will cease to offer my services to the club, if they are of any use, nor should it prevent you. If you are able to offer changes to the "How to" guides I am sure they would be appreciated, by all club & forum members.

Thanks Bob.

I feel my confrontational nature (it appears this way but I'm not) and my issues with certain traders (justified or not) stand in the way of being able to help in anyway.

I'll happy review the how-to guides in my spare time and write new ones, if its going to be useful.

Whatever is regrettable in the past Ross, and we've all been there [you wait till my age you'll be quick to point out laugh ] one needs to move on, and any clearer or new howto's would be more than welcome in my eyes.

It's certainly something I would be grateful for, especially if the pics are visible while one is reading the text. Little yellow pointy things in them are even better laugh

Solution to breaking coupes - just don't sell yours, if it breaks fix it, when that isn't an affordable option then park it up and wait until it is.
Non for sale, non being broke should put a stop to the rot. It's sad to see a car like the coupe up for 500 - 600 quid, we all know about bangernomics and that's where the coupe (most of them, there are a few low milers, minters, modded ones)sits in todays market. Like an old V12 Jag, people are scared of the expense of running one but because they are cheap they are now just another throw away white good.

Is that not concern for the car rather than paranoia?

It surely is, I also suspect that some are plotting against me. Can you help me? tongue

Man, I just love these cars and want to see as many of them on the road as possible hence I started this thread hoping someone can save it. I would do it myself but don't have the space for 4 cars smile
