So I've just got into road bikes, enjoying every minute. Then my brother buys a mountain bike and starts going Llandegla rolleyes I've got to have a bit of that! I now need an MTB. I'm not 100% of my budget yet, but it'll be between £600 and a grand. Any recommendations? What do I need to look out for? Hardtail please.

Coopless!

Voodoo Hoodoo looks best I've found so far. Nothing but rave reviews and £474 in Halfords.

Hunt around the sales on Wiggle, CRC, Evans, Planet X and so on - you should be able to buy a £1000 RRP bike for £600 right now no trouble

2nd hand hardtail!
Lotta bike FTM and no residual loss if you don't like gettin' dirty.

http://paulscycles.co.uk have some good deals on MTBs

The Decathlon ones are meant to offer very good vfm (like the roadbikes)

Just bought a Voodoo Hoodoo in nearly new condition, with upgraded rims and tyres for £300 cool Pretty chuffed with that. Can't wait to hit the trails!

Gotta go with RobShed's advice - go secondhand and get a whole lot of bike for your money. Check out Single Track World Forum - seems that serious MTB-ers hate buying someone else's dream build.
