Anyone had experience of these? Seems pretty impressive, but I've been offered a low mileage one for under a grand, what are the problems with them?

Has it the selespeed (or whatever its called) box? Been told horror stories about them. Don't know how true they are though.

Just if it brakes its a small fortune to fix.

Apart from that I like them and would have had one a while ago but it was silly insurance. (it was like 7 years ago)

Yes, paddle type semi-auto, I had a semi auto on a Citreon years ago and that was nightmare too!

Gearbox is horrendously awefully terrible.
If its not faulting then its on borrowed time.

Even if it does work it ruins the car.
Get a manual or don't get one.

Other than that, great value for money, well equipped and reliable.

The last year I spent at Fiat, these used to come in all the time.
Even when they were brand new I couldn't believe how unrefined they were.
2 customers traded them back in after a month due to there poor driving characteristics .
Shame as the equipment and styling at the time was recipe for success.

2.4 never really took off and devalued heavily since.

Agreed, try and find a rare manual or the Schumacher edition. Also they can be very thirsty as standard I hear.

Past 2.4 Stilo owner here. Nice car, fully loaded and comfi. Felt much more planted and refined to drive than any coupe I had had once wishbones were done.
The engine was lovely, the gearbox destroyed the experience. I had no issues with the gearbox, mine did exactly what it said on the tin but it was slow, clunky and bloody hard work in start/stop traffic.
The select speed brings nothing to the table in terms of being lazy (full auto) or having fun (flappy) its the combined worst of both with none of the benefits.
