Use an acid etch primer and then coat with a satin black. Halfords will sell both.

I'm in the process of using grey zinc 182 for undercoat for several coats then satin black for several coats and the same again for lacquer..all from halfords....The zinc 182 is for rust protection/prevention wink and the satin black comes out lovely with the lacquer.
I would have pics but my brother accidently scratched them while they were awaiting final coat of lacquer.so being a perfectionist I'm starting again.I sand them them back to a fine mirror shine laugh

No harm in trying the metallic black . It's easy enough to change if you don't like it.Put a pic up once you have done though wink

Probably a sill question, but if you lacquer over a satin or matt finish do you end up with just a glossy lacquered finish? I've never put lacquer over the top of satins and matts for this reason just in case. I like the idea of doing the pillars in matt, but would be worried about damaging the finish constantly as it wouldn't be very durable with just paint.

for the best result , its best to remove them from the car so that you can remove the badges , wrap the lacquer , replace badges and fix back onto the car .
