Any CAD people on here ?
I'm looking at getting myself a CAD package of somekind.
Mainly to use for sheet metal work but would like to get into some 3d drawing too.
Any suggestions of which package to go for ???

autocad is mainstream but expensive. Google sketchup might be more use if your just planning to draw basic plan views and play around with 3d modelling etc.

Yeah AutoCad can be a bit pricey, not heard of Google sketchup before. I'll have a look.

how involved do you think you will get. There is an online AutoCAD which might be useful depending on what you want to do?

Its free, have a look https://www.autocadws.com/

It boils down to what you want to do, is this for diy hobby stuff or production environment stuff?

AutoCAD are mixing up there pricing structure at the moment and if not already, soon you can only buy the sweet of AutoCAD products...

One of the AutoCAD sub products should take care of both requirements but at a steep cost.

Sketch up will do what you want, you will need the pro version to get nice exports that you can forward over in to DWG format for CNC work, its much more user friendly but its very much the crayon of the tool set.

What do you want to do as cad packages are broad and wide

Solidworks has a nice little sheet metal add on.

solidworks will do full 3D and and you can do a build of individual parts to make up a full build you can do full movement and stress test on individual parts .... you can say what the materials of the parts are made off and it will work out the weight of the parts to
i have done a soldiworks course and i used Alfa cam for years doing 2D drawings to make gaskets and seals

It's more a hobby thing to start with but i'm doing various drawings for sheet metal work for machines at work.
I would like to learn to draw the 3D components in the future.

For hobby stuff - or even mid-serious stuff - consider this one: http://www.3ds.com/products/draftsight/download-draftsight/ - very similar to Autocad to use, and produces sensible output files. You need to register but it's free.

If you're using Linux, Qcad isn't *bad* but I'm not sure I'd go as far as to say it's *good*. It's somewhat idiosyncratic in its commands...
