Found this article regarding LED lighting for cars.

We are used to LEDs for peripheral lighting, dash boards and interior lighting. I wonder how long 3rd. party LED solutions for H1 bulbs will be. Also how quickly VOSA and DoT will take to ban them through the MoT testing procedure!

The 'very high flux' type would presumably be the Cree type? Approx. 8 of them in an array would equal the light output of a typical H1 halogen (but not a 35W HID!!!- more like 20-30!)

Chris, I was aware of the evolution in this market, are there many vehicles that still us H1 filament type bulbs out there? Would that number of LEDs fit through the bulb hole without major surgery? Would the pattern be compatible with the projector lens arrangement?
I think it would require a brand new headlight set-up and retro fit light unit. And it saddens me to say that the Coupe is probably too old to have one specifically designed for frown
I'm sure there will be plenty of retro kits out there in the future, just not for us frown

I still reckon there has to be a HID designed projector assembly that will retrofit into the original headlight without doctoring.
I have had a quick look and have found a few chinese companies that make H1 fitting bulbs with cree LED's in them
will report back with findings!

Alex,
I've just fitted a 5x5w Cree H1 assembly which claims to produce 700 lumens and the article I found was as a result of Googling for how much output a typical Halogen H1 bulb produces. Answer approx 1500 but only 400 to 1000 on the road.
As a fog lamp it's OK but it has a long way to go before its a substitute for a halogen let alone a HID.

I have H1 cree fog lights (and cree sidelights, front and rear indicators, brake lights and reverse light!), they are pretty bright but i would think not suitable for headlights. I can see the technology improving to the point where single led's will be powerful enough to replace any filament bulb. I remember when the first super bright led's first appeared not so long ago, then the surface mounted type and now cree led's. You only have to search on ebay for cree led and see how they are now being used for everything, some of the torches go up to 10,000 lumens!

Thunderbox I think your correct there, I think personally will just stick with good old halogens for fogs, and led side lights to match HID's in the projector assemblies. aftermarket HID's take too long to ignite for main beams as by the time there up to brightness you dont need them anymore. unless you do ALOT of night time country road driving
