Glass tinting? #1426903

I wasn't aware that the coupe had a factory option of darker tinted glass but the guy I bought this coupe from said it had been done and sure enough the glass is definitely a lot darker than normal. It doesn't seem to be a stick on or spray on tint and the glass still has the original Fiat etching so appears to be the factory fit.

Problem is, the driver's side window glass has presumably been smashed at some point as this window no longer has the Fiat etching and it has a horrible sticky, peeling layer of crap on the inside of the glass , so it appears someone has tried (badly) to match the "factory tint" on this window with a stick on or spray on film at some point.

Checking Eper only shows one type of replacement window, no option for different tints. Has anyone heard of this factory tint option?

I've ordered a used driver's window from ebay to replace mine, but really not sure how it'll look if it's a lot lighter than the other windows so I may end up trying to have it tinted to match.

Anyone have experience of window tinting ?

I used to know a guy, years ago, who owned a company, doing different coatings on glass, flat & car also. Coloring, darkening, polarising & etc., but don´t know the technology they used. So that should be the right path to achieve factory-like tint...or profesionally done film tinting, there are now multiple choices on transaparency, from fully transparent with UV-protection only to full black.

Are we talking about the door glass, or the quarters? I've just noticed that my quarters have gone sticky. I've cleaned most of one side and am awaiting another bright day to do the other. But sure enough it's some kind if tint as the clean side stands out between the two. I'd be interested to know if it was some kind of dealer extra. It's a very subtle tint. I can't work out if the rear screen or front windows have it also.

The door glass and all 3 windows in the rear are definitely a lot darker than standard, not 100% sure on the windscreen, it may be a bit darker too.

Actually, having just had a damn good look at the passenger door window it does have a slight lip and tiny edge that's lighter so I think it must just be a stick on film.

In that case I can probably get one of those window tint companies to match the driver's door to the rest.

Thanks.

I have a coupe that was Middle East spec from new. This had darker glass fitted from the factory.
A couple of years ago the drivers window was broken in France and needed to be replaced. The company took the vin number and matched the glass when they got the replacement. It was not a genuine part from Fiat. The company that I used was the French part of Autoglass. Maybe you could give them a call and see if they can help you out.

To finish this glass tinting tale off...

Turns out the tinting on the front windows was illegal (it must pass at least 70% of light for front windows and 75% for windscreen), so I just removed the tint film from both the front windows.

That left a horrible sticky mess on both windows, so 3 bottles of glue remover and 4 hours with a razor blade later, it's all clear and windows look perfect.

They reckon a clear window will only pass about 85% of light, so if the window has any factory tint at all (as it does in all the coupe glass) that brings it down close to the legal limit and you basically can't fit any tint film and remain legal. Rear windows and rear screen you can have as dark as you like of course.
