An issue has just cropped up on the Freelander.
It runs discs on the front and drums at the back.
Pads are only a couple of months old.

The brakes feel fine under modest foot pressures and there is definitely some servo effect, however when you need to pull up faster they don't seem to have the bite they had last week.
There isn't any pulling to the left or right, and the foot pedal position seems the same.

I'm wondering if it might be some kind of servo issue?
Has anyone had anything similar?
Any thoughts appreciated.

Bleed the rear brakes. It could be the first signs of the cylinders weeping.

Also check the sliders on the front. All Rovers have a tendency to seize on the lower slider.

Thanks szkom.
When you say slider you mean the thing the caliper moves on?

Thanks Theresa,
Just found this which prompts a journey into the rear hubs and also suggests an issue with the master cylinder - so it could be anything.... frown

Vacuum booster diagnosis.

Quick test for your rear brakes; try the brakes with the handbrake applied a couple of clicks (in wide open space obviously). If it improves, then you could need to investigate. For what it's worth I'd try bleeding the rears anyway. I've always found it to help if you don't know when it was done.

I doubt you have any major problems. Pump the brake pedal, with the engine off, several times. It should get harder with each press. Hold the pedal. It should not drop. If it doesn't, the brake lines/seals are good. Continue to hold pedal down and start the engine. The pedal should drop. Which means the servo is okay.

And sometimes it's just the pads. You have to remember the car has no sporting potential. A few hard stops may have glazed them.

It is diesel (TD4).
So there's a pump eh? Might have to have a dig around. in there.

Skzom - I'm just going out to do the servo test.

I've been away for a couple of days so sorry for the slow replies.

It turned out to be a thin vacuum line that ran out of the side of an NRV into the manifold had a break in it.

Thanks very much for your help.
