I want to upgrade my door handles by spraying them, but they are a bit corroded on the outside, which is very common. What is the best way to treat the corrosion.? What stuff should I use to stop it?

Henk

Sand or sandblast any corrosion
Polish / wet and dry
Bake in the oven at 180°C for half an hour

That stops the rot. You can also skip the last step if you take them for a powder coat, as that does the baking process for you.

They are a special alloy. And that alloy sucks.

At least it's not a special alloy that snaps when you use the handle.

Courtesy of John Snijders - material's called "Zamac". Alloy of zinc and aluminium. Rear light cups are the same material. And to be precise, John recommends to powercoat twice and slightly sand between the sessions. The first coating will reveal tiny bubbles because of the oxidation.

I have also read that a mixture of vinegar and lemon juice (in water) also helps cleaning the corroded spots. Any experience with that? Model cars made of zamac are treated that way, with good results, apparently. I am not sure though....
