I have a standard 20vt - with the standard turbo. I know you can't decat as it knackers the turbo seals(thats what I read anyway!?) but is a sports/race cat OK?

I need a new exhaust as the tail pipe has fallen off and, thinking of future power upgrades, should I just get a stainless system with a sport/race cat fitted now?

may be expensive! may be as effective to upgrade your turbo?
not sure but not many options when i checked for a sports cat for a 20vt circa £350 supplied iirc...
obviously you may be able to find an understanding mot centre and go decat for a lot less than a sports.. unless you already have a new or low mileage turbo it may be wise to contemplate one if your on the original with staggered seals and whatever variant you wish? of course i guess your current situation means you have to sort the exhaust 1st.

The cat is usually it's own section in the exhaust.
I'm sure having said that you could get a system that doesn't have this section if you wanted though.

I'd sort your exhaust then decide about the cat later.

I would really like to see proof that a decat ruins your turbo...

I ran decat for a couple of years with no problems, there are also plenty of other folks who run decat with no problems. I think the issue is if your turbo is already on the way out going decat may well finish it off. If your planning engine upgrades then a new turbo should be somewhere on the list so why not go decat and if the turbo starts to smoke replace it with bigger one

I agree that it's likely the lack of back pressure can push ageing turbos over the edge. Is it worth the risk?

Removing a cat will not hurt a turbo so long as it does not cause it to overspeed. A well designed exhaust should not actually add backpressure to the system however they usually add some and as they age the effect will increase. Keeping this back pressure in the exhaust is a rather nifty way of keeping the oil inside a turbo when the seals are worn or gone, the exhaust pressure will put a load the seal and may even enter the turbo housing, blowing the oil away from the seal, just like blow by on piston rings.

Not had one myself but have fitted one of these systems to a coupe , very good quality , nice burble at idle and sounded nice on full chat , Not to loud , good price for a turbo back exhaust

I have Powerflow systems with 200 cell race cats on two of my Coupes, and have had no issues apart from emissions at MOT time. Both pass routinely after using half a tank of petrol revving in the garage!

I'm too idle to bother with a decat, even on my Stage 3 Scottie which goes quite quickly enough.....

When I decatted my Sprinty, many years ago, the turbo was running fine with no smoke.

After the decat was fitted, it began smoking within a couple of minutes and never recovered.

Basic turbos use pressure-differential seals - ie they depend on a positive pressure in the turbine housing to help the seal keep the oil in the CHRA - remove (or reduce) the pressure and the seals will fail.

Admittedly, a low-mileage turbo may not fail straight away, but decatting will accelerate the inevitable seal failure

Indeed. My kit doesn't need a cat (and I don't want one right under all that fibreglass) but I do have an extra silencer box in the same place to apply some back pressure.

Aren't OEM cats (OEM fitted, not necessarily the original part) now an MOT check/fail?

I have a powerflow 100 cell race cat on mine and the emissions are a bit of a issue come mot time.

Do you know if they cause premature wear of the Turbo (due to back pressure) or if they work well generally?

If you’re using a std OEM journal bearing turbo, you should run the cat, otherwise the turbo will wear out at a faster rate due to the lack of back pressure
