hello,
i done my first track day last month at brands hatch in my newly purchaced 20vt on standard road tyres

i was thinking of getting 2 federal 595rs-r tyres for the front, and running pirelli p6000 on the rear, as funds are a little tight at the moment

do you think running semi slicks on the front and road tyres on the rear is a bad idea ? if anyone has tried this setup i would appreciate some advice?

running semi slicks on the front and road tyres on the back is fine especially if its slightly damp on track but ive found the p6000 are like plastic and dont handle to well.

I would be careful running track tyres on the front and normal tyres on the back, on a hot day the back end can get very loose. Not much chance of that at this time of the year though !

I'd concur with this, in that it gets very light on the rears braking into corners. If you put the road tyres on the front and the sticky ones on the rear, the worst that can happen is it doesn't steer it'll scrabble when putting the power down...

With respect to tyres, there's two ways to approach a trackday....

1) Fit cheap road tyres (even part worns) and go out with the intention of wearing them out and the expectation that the car will be a little wayward and a bit of a mobile chicane round the twisty bits - end result, lots of laughs and (relatively) minor expense

2) save up, fit proper trackday tyres and exploit the considerable increase in grip and have some decent dices with machinery that should leave the Coupe for dead. End result, lots of laughs, some raised eyebrows and a higher expenditure.

Generally, I'd go for #2 because I'm very competitive. However, what I wouldn't do it mix and match - as has been said above, the rear end of a Coupe gets very wayward when the tyres get hot, which they will do very quickly if you have trackday rubber up front. Putting the sticky rubber on the rear is pointless, as the front will just push wide as soon as the power is on - might as well stick with Option 1 rather than waste good trackdays tyres on the rear.

FWIW, this was the state of my 100-mile old Toyos after just ONE lap of Bruntingthorpe shocked driving

at brands i ran p-zero's on the front and budgets on the rear with standard suspension (lots of understeer) this time im going to have koni springs with adjusaible shock damping, i think im going to give the fereral 595rs-r a go on the front p zero on rear and take the p6000 as spare incase it dont feel right

my thinking was the rear tyres dont get that hot dont do much of the breaking so it should feel ok. if not then i will just have to buy 2 more semi slicks for next track day :-)

Coupedummy, what tyres were you on when the rear broke free?

I use hankook ventus v12 evo on the front which I find for the price very good, and I have federal ss595 on the back (cheap and nasty) and I find it handles lovely on the road, much more balanced and less pronounced understeer. However in the wet lifting off will induce a big slide! I've got a track day coming up though and I think ill end up swapping front to back for safety! I think slow in fast out is the order of the day for this set up...

I certainly wouldn't recommend P6000s on the rear - my coupe had these when I got it, and suffered from lift-off oversteer at normal road speeds, never mind on a trackday. They're not a grippy tyre. Whatever tyres you choose, put 4 of the same on, then the car should be reasonably balanced. And there's no point scrimping on decent tyres for a trackday - if you put it in the barriers it'll cost way more than 4 decent tyres.

tyre setup produced a little over steer on lift off which was fun!
