I have a chance of getting an 03 reg BMW 530D manual (rare) with 120k miles for around £2,000.
Does anyone (apart from Jim C who, from memory, broke his) have any advice/tips/dire warnings.
I already own a 2001 5 series so I'm aware of the potential rust areas.

How very dare you! I didn't exactly break mine, the turbo went while driving sedately on a trip to France! ended up spending £1200 getting it repatriated and fitted with a recon unit.
As biggbn says, watch out for swirl flaps - the manual is not supposed to have them, but try getting a definitive answer from anyone, including BMW... The only way to be sure is to look. If it does have them, you can get blanking plates fitted reasonably easily.
Ours was also the M-Sport manual and both MrsC and I would have another in a heartbeat. It was an epic car - quick enough, 41mpg overall, comfy, and surefooted (except when the rear tyres were worn, when it would step out alarmingly easily).
Go for it, you lucky man!

Go for it, you lucky man! Thanks gents. Sorry Jim. I couldn't remember the circumstances of yours 'failing to proceed'. I've also got a 2002 320D that still has its swirl flaps fitted although I intend to rectify this myself - there's plenty of guides on YouTube and the kit costs under £25 delivered. I haven't looked at the car beyond walking past it on the street. I work at a garage (as an accountant, not a mechanic) and this thing is a trade-in so it might be an absolute heap or it might be quite good. I don't know what kit it has or if there's any service history. I will endeavour to find out when I'm back at work tomorrow although Mrs Tim has already been on the phone to me to see if I've bought it yet

Re swirl flaps...I got the info re manual versions not having them from two separate bmw forums and an Indy BMW specialist, so don't take it as read!! Very untypical of a thorough company like BMW to potentially spoil the ship for a happ'worth of tar as it were. My experience was very similar to Jim though...swift, very sure footed and easy 40 plus mpg....i would buy another tomorrow. The 530 d and subsequent s80d5 I owned really turned me on to how good a diesel could be...

I'm not sure a 2002/3 version will have a DPF? I took it home last night and let SWMBO have a go as well. It seems pretty decent. There's a full history (specialists for the last few services) and a reasonable amount of work has been done although it looks like it needs front discs and pads. In addition the bodywork is a wee bit more tatty than I would expect although I see that perfect examples with higher miles are £3500-4500 on autotrader and ebay so afor around £2k I can't complain. I'm also not sure how much MOT it has so if that can be resolved it might be winging its way to my driveway

MOT runs until the 29th so I've just dropped it off* at my work's favoured test station to see what happens. * None of the mechanics, etc felt the need to road test any of the vehicles on site so I had to walk back. The life of an accountant isn't all glamour

Fail. 2 rear tyes, front discs and pads plus anti roll bar links at the front. I reckon that's about £500 worth and there's no movement (yet) on the price of £2300 so Mrs Tim has said no - it was going to be her paying for it in a rare turn of events I'll be interested to see how long she sticks with the Stilo for now.

The life of an accountant isn't all glamour I've just taken accountant off my possible change of career list! I had to walk back down to the garage to pick the car up again. Normally the techs are in and out like flies but not today That's twice I've managed to walk past that bakers and not go in for a filled roll!!

^ Ha ha, me too, had to google it (still not sure what they do) As far as I can tell they are there to improve the emissions of the car when it's idling - specifically for the EU emissions test. So, effectively, the whole range is compromised just so that the 1 car the EU bods are given can look better in some completely false test that decides what your cars CO2 rating will be

My wife has given her approval. I reckon it can be done - with 2 decent tyres - for about £400-450 if I get it done by an indie.

I assume 17 inch alloys? Sounds like a reasonable price given. Although tbh I don't remember the discs, pads, and drop links being very expensive when I changed them on my brother's.
One thing worth mentioning is the prop damper, output shaft seal, slave cylinder and piping. They all started failing on ours and the smoothness really suffered. Just something to keep an eye on. It does have the 17 inch wheels. I think discs were about £30 each plus the same for pads. I have another 5 series and the brake pipes were done on it a couple of years ago - the garage didn't thank me for bringing it in

Tim - I don't think you can argue given the prices of both cars you've discussed recently.
You're paying trade (maybe slightly less!), and as such you'd always expect issues to rectify. Neither of these are insurmountable?
The BMW was a trade in and they gave the guy £2k for it so I'm happy to pay that plus the cost of repairs. Although it does seem a bit of a bargain I think the ones you see on Ebay and Autotrader at £3.5k+ are in better condition bodily - this one is going on the offside front arch and the bootlid has been repaired around the handle (the same place my existing 5 is going and a known weak spot) but the fuel filler looks to be in fine condition as does the strip between the bootlid and bumper. I've asked to see it on the ramp just to make sure the underneath isn't rotten then it'll be mine.
