My current Lacie Network Space 2 1TB hasn't got very much room left on it, so am looking at upgrading to a 2 bay NAS. Most suggestions seem to be for either QNAP or Synology, but I haven't got much of a clue which would suits my needs better? They also seem quite pricey just for an enclosure, but guess I am on borrowed time in the event of a disk failure.

The current NAS is used purely for storage of films and TV programs, which are then played through my media PC running XBMC on it as well as using the inbuilt torrent client, along with the occasional remote access into the NAS.

I await a comment from Jim 'I have no idea about technology' Clennell since I think he is meant to be a pro on Nas's now rofl

I can't think *what* you mean...!

I bought this HP Proliant microserver and 2x 1TB HDDs and set it up using unRAID

Although the expert involved is Hyperlink - he held my hand through the tears...

It works well though and if I can do it...

To add to my PM I think there is not a great deal between a QNAP or Synology (or atleast when I last bought there wasn't) when looking like for like. Other options would be an HP ProLiant MicroServer which are pretty cheap or repurpose an old desktop either of which will need a suitable OS which could be a standard linux distro or something a little more specialist like UNRAID.

I would also look for more disk space and/or drive slots than you need now - it will most likely make it easier latter on.

Thank Jim but I'm not really an expert - just a case of passing on the knowledge of others I had found when doing the setup for mine. In fact I have managed to bugger mine up whilst reorganising disks so my crashplan no longer works frown

Very modest, but you did help enormously! Remember, where I'm concerned, being an expert is relative!

The two ReadyNAS I run at home and at work have run faultlessly for a combined 12 years. They're not the fastest thing out there but easy to set up and have a great backup utility.
