Very simple question:
If I put sound deadening material on the door skin (inside and all over) is it best to add a layer of closed cell foam (3mm) on the top of that or on the door card side of the door?
Thanks, Ross.

The CCF is mainly used as a decoupler for MLV.

Add the deadening (CLD) to the outer skin as best as possible, some say 25% coverage is fine some say up to 100% so I always go for as most as possible, then add to the inner skin and if you can seal up any panel gaps. Then cover the inner skin with CCF. I'm not sure with the coupe but on my last car I could seal up the inner skin fully with the deadening sheets and still get the door card back on, on this car I can't as the door card moulds into the skin so had to seal it up with CCF.

To get the best from it I'd then add MLV (mass loaded vinyl) ontop of the CCF which really cuts down on road noise.

I've also added some egg crate foam to the back of the door card

I get my deadening from Car audio direct and use Silent Coat, CCF I get from foam solutions and MLV can be had cheap in the bottom link smile

Cheers Dia,
The Silent coat was exactly the product & pack I had in mind. I've found a cheaper source of larger sheets of CCF here wink
But the sound proofing mat (MLV) is a new one on me. Can this be used instead of CCF? Or does it benefit better if you use it under the door card as well as CCF? Maybe on the inside of the frame of the door?
My understanding of the multiple layer systems is that they filter out the separate frequency groups of the unwanted sounds and boost the sound coming from the speaker, correct me if I'm wrong ;-)
Thanks for your help, Ross smile

Yeah the SC stuff is great. I've also tried the multilayer extra but wouldn't recommend it and just stick to the cheaper 2mm sheets.

The MLV is heavy vinyl sheets, this is what blocks the outside noise out. So the CLD (deadening sheets) add mass to the panels and cut down on vibrations, CCF goes over this and that acts as a decoupler for the MLV. I'd just get 2mm or 3mm thickness CCF as it's a right pain to get the carpet back in or door cards back on with thicker material. The MLV also has to be as close to 100% coverage as possible to be effective.

There's also a butyl rope that some use, I haven't bothered though.

Here's my project thread on Uksaabs, lots of pics but gives you an idea (still no where near done) frown

The greatest sound deadening is at the rear quarter panels. Then pref. foam type mats on the inside of the plastic panels.
Extra material stuck on the outer steel panels just deadens vibrations and its already been done by Fiat. Also it adds risk of rust.
