Hi I'm not sure if this topic has been covered already but

A few Saturday's ago I had a full service and a 2nd hand turbo put in, plus other things also.. everything was fine car was running great, but after the car had warmed up to a good temperature I put my foot down and my boost went all the way up to 27psi and the warning light came on, so I called the garage to see what it could be! It was set before at 15 psi

Took the car back and I've been told my boost controller was no good, but it was fine before the work was carried out?

So they took it out and also took the dump valve out and replaced it with a standard one. Everything is fine now but since the controller has been removed it's obviously down on boost and I already miss that extra little bit of power

So my question is which boost controller is better? The one I had before was a R spec ball and spring mechanism.

Thanks in advance

Hose to the actuator has split, or come off.

Follow the hose from it, and look see.

If you have a few quid to spend I'd recommend an electronic boost controller. I have a Gizzmo on my Stage 3 Scottie and it works a treat (as well as being fun). On-line you can pick one up for around £200.

Good luck,
Tim

manual boost controllers are notorious for being crap though.

do check for vacuum / boost leaks though, could cause issues!

If you're going to stick to manual I'd recommend one of these...

Minimal boost creep and seem to be the best for adjustment and maintaining boost.

No it doesn't have to be manual, I just want something that's decent but not too pricey.

Thanks for the help. Il look into it

A ball & spring device is very basic, it can't just fail. What boost are you seeing now, and how did they remedy the problem?

They took out the boost controller , removed my dump valve and put a standard one in? I'm getting 10 psi now before I was getting 15. Plus it worked fine before I had full service etc done?

It would appear you are now running direct i.e. base wastegate pressure. Also sounds like they plumbed the boost controller in the wrong way round which would cause the overboost as described. Call me if you want some advise.

Thanks. I'm in Bristol in a week or too anyway so I might bring the car round to see what I can do to improve the car. Thanks again

For the record, it was Motormech that supplied and fitted the turbo

The boost controller was fitted correctly (pressure hose into the ball of the controller). To be fair, it wasn't fitted by Motormech and wasn't touched when the replacement turbo was fitted (other than to disconnect the two hoses and reconnect them to the new turbo).

When we tried to blow into the boost controller, it was solid - couldn't blow through it at all, even with the adjuster wound all the way out.

Given that the boost controller was allowing no air through at any setting, this is the obvious cause of the overboost

We decided the safest option would be to fit a standard electronic boost control valve

Not sure why the DV was replaced though (although it was an atmospheric, which we believe to be unsuitable for a 20vt)
