Hello team- silly question time!

Although somebody must have gone through this before; how much hassle is there in retrofitting AC to a non-AC car?

Obviously there's the compressor and condenser/radiator and hosing plus the switch- is there a control unit? Is it a disaster to attempt to have done or is it just 'tricky'?

I only ask as I have a spec list for a forthcoming car which is proving elusive- a 20V non-turbo without sunroof and with AC.
I have the opportunity on a car at the moment with two of those things and I'm trying to find out how difficult it would be to retrofit the third. (I wouldn't be doing it myself)

thanks

JimP

Would be a nightmare.
Dash out, drill bulkhead, all electrics and relays plus the mechanical side which would involve removing all the ancilliaries in order to for the different bracket for the pump .

Put it this way I wouldn't do it.

really?

crikey- I hadn't realised- I thought the interaction of hoses would be under the bonnet or the extra stuff would be through knockouts in the bulkhead...

has anyone ever done it?

Don't even think about it. Sell the car, and buy one with aircon.

The engine ancillaries are different, the bulkhead is different, the looms are different, the centre console is different, the cabin heating is different...

Take all the replies above and double them and it would still be an underestimate of the difficulty.

It would be easier to turn a turbo car with a/c to a non turbo spec. Good time then to fit a 2.4 engine as per Joe at FCSS smile

whoa!

sorry Johnnybravo and thankyou barnacle-

I don't mean to 2nd guess good advice; I was just desperate for it to be possible...!

I don't own the car yet (now, nor will I following your advice) but having found a 20V without a sunroof the opportunity seemed to good to miss- but miss it I'll have to...

thanks for the input

Not a Coupe but i fitted Air con in a 1990 vauxhall cavilier
Dont ask why! too much time on my hands and always been one for a challenge!
Anything can be done its just as said above really not worth the hassle specially when there are plenty of 20vt's with air con about
Saying that i have air con and it has never worked! hopefully one day but am i bothered? not really
There was only one day last year it would of been nice! lol

wow- that could be it!

yes- thanks for that; however- I'm trying to source the 20v NON turbo version; which is a VERY rare car by all accounts nowadays.

Then I'm off to Italy for a long planned adventure and it'll be hot hot!
