I am looking at this;

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1997-FIAT...t=Automobiles_UK&hash=item20df7d70b6

and the chap says it has a 'slight knocking on full lock when pulling away'.

Now, I am not daft- a car for this kind of money is definitely going to need work done straight away, but does this kind of issue as described; seem irrepairable - or a classic Coupe issue...?

Thanks again!

First thoughts would point to an outer CV joint at end-of-life, perhaps?.

It wil probably knock at either full lock, but probably be more pronounced at one particular direction as the CV joint takes the brunt of the movement loading.

can you tell me (I know this has been covered extensively but I don't have it to hand) what would be a 'good' oil pressure for a standard 20v, please...?

Jim, give Steve at AA a bell at

Any motor at this price should probably carry a £1,500 addition with it, either for corrosion/paint treatment, belts or clutch but hey-ho you may still have a runnable delight for modest outlay smile

More headroom in this one but no mention of A/C frown

Oil pressure - I've got my amateur thoughts but the latest thread on this is here

and there are many more professional rumblings on the matter laugh

The 20v I tried ran happily at 2 and a bit when warm and around 3 when cold.

Edinburgh is bang on I think; it'll likely need money spent. But I wouldn't discount it at that price.

What I would say is that the description makes me think ball joint. I'd grab the front wheels and vigorously rock them each at the 3+9 o'clock, and then at the 12+6 position. Put your weight into it and you should hear/see any knocks.

JimP, I think you need to spend a bit of time reading the How to's/FAQS mate. No disrespect but knowing the basics will help you decide if it's a dog or not. Have you been to see the car?

Thanks Shifty.

I've owned a couple of Coupe's in the past- (out of 11 FIATs) but there's been a gap of a while.- I just thought I'd enquire about this couple of details.

I haven't been down to see it yet, no- if it's still available next Wednesday, I might try then. I've asked a series of loaded questions to the owner and I've got quite far.

I am fully aware that it will need it's own cost again a couple of times to produce anything mechanically decent (before I even get to the cosmetics) but there's not much choice for my height I'm afraid.
