After a new TV and not sure what to go for. Spoke to a guy in a shop today and he was rating LG for value for money, but always had this feeling LG were a bit pony??

Told him im a little put off by Samsung as we have had one for 4 years and it buggered, so many problems with it and same with my parents TV.

Anyway, looking for a 42" minimum to a 46/47" max.

Criteria in no particular order:
Reliable
Great picture/colour quality
Good sound
Any smart wifi stuff etc is a bonus.

Budget £600-£800

One that was recommended to me in this store was this LG below.

http://www.richersounds.com/product/...0v/lg-47la740v

Thanks.

His advice might be a bit out of date now but the local TV repair guy (yes, they do still exist) says that most "branded" TVs are Samsung under the skin. He also said steer clear of LG. Pricing-wise there's a lot of rubbish going on where big buyers spec up a slightly different version of a common TV (extra or less sockets) and price however they like. It's all a bit of a minefield. Your budget ought to get something good - maybe choose something you like the look of and buy from John Lewis with their free longer warranty.

I have a number of flat screens. The best is the Sony Bravia, followed by the Toshiba's I have had.

Saying this we have a 42" LG in the lounge, this has been great. The best, without doubt is the 40" Sony in the bedroom. Fantastic piece of kit

Any passive 3d set you buy will use an lg screen irrespective of brand

Can't go wrong with Panasonic or Sony tbh, samsungs tend to go wrong

I came on here some years ago asking the same question. I was quickly directed to an av forum & trawled for ages absorbing anything that related to my needs.

Sony & Panasonic were the order of the day & I landed with the Sony Bravia. I went into a local Sony centre & was blown away by the TV, surround sound speakers & I also wanted a DVD player. Saved myself a small fortune by going on line & delivered to my door. HD nature program pictures are just astounding, even my wife still goes on about the quality pic's cool

I'm an old git & happy with it,most of the time

Not sure why LG are getting a pasting, I've had mine for a few years, an early smart tv I guess, (before they were called that) and it's been great.

I've been looking at getting a new TV for a while and I have similar requirements to you (but keep spending the money on other things).

I was told (by a guy in Currys) that Samsung were making the best TVs at the moment.

I've had no dramas with my LCD Samsung which has to be 10 years old now.

On that budget I'd go for a 50" LG plasma. The smart version is around £600 and the non-smart about £500.

The Panasonic plasmas do have a slightly better picture but are 2-3x the price.

I have a 42" LG. It's fab had it two or three years now, no problems whatsoever. There are loads of good offers on Tv's at the moment though. Tesco and argos have 42" - 50" Smart TV's for around £650.00!

One thing I would recommend is asking yourself if you really need a smart TV?

The guy in Currys was trying to sell it to me but I don't see any of the benefits.

We have TiVo which, as far as I can see, gives us everything we'd use from a smart TV.

Yes - I have a Smart TV and I'm not sure it does anything particularly well.

What power do plasmas use? The ones I've come across seem to kick out loads of heat

I bought a Samsung UE40F6740 just after Christmas - I don't use the Smart functions or the 3D and rarely the Wi-Fi - I just bought it for the picture quality (600hz) and the styling (very narrow bezel).

My last Samsung lasted 9 years before the screen started to get dull patches - if this one lasts as long, I'll be chuffed

It also comes in 46", so would fit the bill perfectly

have bought several TVs over the last few years, and a strong believer in the Which Guide tests and reviews to help give guidance.

Generally, Samsung branded TVs come top on picture quality, average on reliability, and poor on sound quality (not an issue if using a surround sound receiver).

LG come high on picture quality, not bad on reliability, and OK on sound.

I have two 40 inch Samsungs, a small Samsung, and a small LG (which was Which guide best buy for 32inch size).

Can't beat a good Samsung I reckon.
