Having been in two minds about fitting a K&N induction kit i decided to give it a try.
I was given a second hand cone without the connecting pipework so after thinking about where abouts i would like to position it i bought an alloy pipe and connectors and fitted the cone where the original side mount intercooler sat. Hopefully this will give a nice cold air feed. It also means i get to have another shiny pipe under the bonnet. cool
The only issue now is avoiding deep puddles shocked

Looks cool, but is it seriously worth the risk of hitting that deep puddle unexpectedly, say at night?

A few years ago at an AGM,we were out on a run in heavy rain and i seem to remember someone having that exact problem.

Is that the best position for this James? Is it really better that positioned in the normal place for the air filter? Looks nice, but you will be gutted should there be problems mate?

As above, I'd put it where the original box goes. The difference in air density between the two locations is negligible. You would also shorten the inlet tract considerably which should improve your spool.

The lowest part of the cone is about 3 inches off the undertray so it would have to be a pretty deep puddle. At the moment it is sitting behind the hole in bumper that was in front of the intercooler duct so optimum for cold air flow. I will probably cut the pipe down a little so I can actually see the cone, saves worrying too much about puddles, not that I ever take it out in the rain!

there are alot of people running sips and don't suck up water , it should be ok james , I've not had any problems with my sip and filter , you could always trim the pipe and bring the filter up higher into the bumper .

Good job you dont live on my road, sometimes in heavy rain, it's close to needing a jeep to get through it in parts!

Looks good, I'll be fitting a cone myself after a few necessary jobs, if I don't get fed up and sell, sounded great on my previous coupe.

Just dont use the actual cone filter, K&N isn't a dry filter. Please AEM or such!

Think about it this way. Where does your inducted air have to go?
Into a turbine to be compressed.

I can see the point of having a cold air feed on N/A but it's pretty pointless when its got to be squashed and heated up before it then goes through an intercooler to try and bring the air temp down to a temp thats still way higher than than any cold feed you can try and get in to start with.

Steve, that is true, but if you're sucking in hot air, the intercooler has to work harder (or be very efficient) to reduce the temp down even more. Starting with a colder charge will help with the overall air temp after the intercooler.

I'm still not sure it would make a difference.

Let's say normal intake temp is 20 degrees

and cold air temp is 10 degrees.

The charge is going to be compressed and heated to 80+ degrees. To be then cooled to around 30 degrees by (a good) intercooler.

Fair play if I'm wrong but that's how I see it

That ten degree difference at the start is inconsequential as its still going to get to a very high temp.

Edz had a gta with a k&n that was over the manifold and he said it felt flat , installed a dba with cold air feed away from the manifold and he said the car felt like it had 30 more horses so a cold air feed does work on n/a or turbo'd cars .
