The wife and I celebrate our first wedding anniversary soon and we've decided on a weekend in the capital. It'll be a Friday night seeing a show, having dinner and staying in a hotel followed by a Saturday and Sunday visiting my sister in South Woodford.

Unless anyone has any recommendations for a 'must visit' hotel that doesn't cost the earth we'll probably use the Secret Hotels option on lastminute.com, it's served us well in the past.

We were bought theatre tokens at Christmas and we're tossing up between going to see either War Horse or Matilda. Whichever we choose we'll go to a matinee performance so we can have the evening for dinner and drinks.

So, recommend me a restaurant please. We'll both eat pretty much anything and if it's something a bit unusual then all the better.

Mon Plaisir used to do a very good value pre-theatre meal.

Looks like they still do,

Not huge portions, but good quality. They will give you free glass of champagne if you sign up to their newsletter.

I've never had a bad meal there.

Good call on the Secret hotel's idea, most must visit hotels are a fortune.

For proper michelin star cooking/service I can recommend Koffman's at the Berkley, the 3 course pre Theatre menu is a steal at £28, if you can handle eating at 6.30 and posibly being turned around before 8.30

For something a bit less classical and more fun/camp

The waiters in pink bow ties here are excellent.

If excellent steak is your thing, Hawksmoor cannot be beaten.

If you fancy Offal or squirrel Fergus Henderson at St John is great;

I'm sure you'll get loads of other suggestions, but those would be my choices! Have fun.

I took the Mrs here a year or so ago. Perfect for catching the train into the centre. Rooms were lovely.

It wasn't too expensive either.

It is at Chelsea Bridge, near Battersea.

Hotel

Ali, if you decide to take your beloved to Paris, City of romance (yeah, right!), can I offer some advice?

Thank you for the suggestions. Will run them all past Mrs Ali and see what she fancies.
