Anyone able to recommend a good one?

I have the router (bt homehub) in the front room. Signal is all but lost in the garden.

Hence requirement!

Despite recent interference issues, my Devolo powerline extender has been very good overall. There are lots of online reviews...

I switched the wifi off on my router and now use one of these instead (as recommened on here I think). There's also a longer range verison if required or you can just add more.
One of these

Up yours Photobucket.

I almost bought a booster for mine until I got a tip from the guy I was about to buy it from..

Your wifi signal is on a channel which your computer detects automatically. They always use channel 1, 7 and 11 (you may need to double check this first can't be 100% sure right now) which majority of people will be using which in turn will make your signal strength drop

You can change the channel by downloading an app on your pc laptop or tablet which allows you to change it again and I apologise for not being sure but Google which app or programme is better

Best of all is that it is free

Worth a try before buying a booster

Download and install inSSIDer, it'll show you exactly what's going on with the wifi signals around you, allowing you to pick a channel thats not in use.

From experience, changing to an unoccupied channel sometimes leads to unforeseen problems; I did this at one house where there were around a dozen wifi signals and it worked fine for my laptop, but the reception on MrsC's MacBook was much worse on the new channel.

The point with the 2.4GHz wifi is that although you are nominally 'on' the channels mentioned above, the actual signal takes up six channels, twelve in some cases, and so you are guaranteed to have collisions and retries because your signal is fighting with the neighbours, the neighbour's dog, the chap across the street...

I solved the problem with a 5GHz link which doesn't go through brick walls and means that I get *all* the bandwidth. Mwahahahaha!

That does rely on receiving devices being able to use 5GHz

Indeed. Some of mine don't, but at least they're not fighting with the ones that do.

I solved my wifi woes by setting up a Ubiquiti UniFi wifi controller and a couple of their PoE UAPs.

300Mbps with a range of 400ft each. Fantastic kit smile

In fact, I'm connected to your wifi now, one4seven. Cheers!
