Gear-lever too long?

I want to change my gear-knob because some Halfords-loving previous owner has put the ugliest chrome thing in the world on there, but while I was looking it occurred to me that the gear-lever itself is just too damn long.
The gearbox is so positive it doesn't need a long throw, but while it has that plastic lift-reverse sleeve on it I can't just can't down the length of the arm.
But I can if I just throw away the plastic lift-reverse sleeve, cut the gear-lever down to a decently short length and bolt a nice, neat leather gear-knob on top.
Is there any reason why I can't do this? I'm old and wise enough not to accidentally go from 5th to reverse!
Cheers.
