Sounds like your low speed rheostat isn't bring the radiator fan on at 98 degrees.

Fitting an after market fan is just covering an issue tbh, the standard fans have always worked well from experience.

If the fan isnt coming on at 90 degrees, check that the large green resistor on the top of the fan unit isnt damaged. If it is, then your low speed fan will not come on.

It points to a stuck thermostat to me. The pipe which goes to the top of the radiator should get suddenly hot at 90C when the stat opens. This is a common fault and can be fixed by replacing the thermostat.

So your checklist:

1) check the electrical connectors of the resistor on the fan unit, pull the connectors off and inspect them, the contacts corrode away so the fan doesn't switch on. Also check the fuse for the fan.

2) check the pipes to the rad get hot at around 90'C, you should also feel the radiator start to warm up, if it isn't then the thermostat is stuck closed.

3) check the radiator fins aren't crumbling away, it will struggle to cool if the rad is corroding away.

Any more?
