So, Stepson Major is very happy with his Cubot S208, bought for the princely sum of £85 and doing what he wants. So far.
Now, it is the turn of stepdaughter to choose a new device. Clearly, she wouldn't be seen dead with a bit of no-brand tat suitable for a crude younger brother, so the search is on... She has now told me that she would like the Nokia Lumia 925, which it seems can be had for £26.50/month on a 24 month contract with 300 minutes, unlimited texts and 250MB of data. To me, this doesn't seem like a great deal (especially as she was getting the same deal but with 500MB for £16 before deciding to upgrade.
I've no objections to her going the Windows phone route (I've told her to check her favourite apps or equivalent are available on Windows store), but she is about to start a great apprenticeship where the only disadvantage is the rotten pay. She is already attempting to run a car and I fear this may be a bit of a stretch. She may get some cash for her birthday and I would think she might be better buying a phone outright rather than going the contract route.
What is the general view here? What are the main Android rivals to the Lumia 925 and how much should they be available for? Are Windows phones on better deals to promote sales?

Could you do a solid review on that cubot phone please. Quite keen on reviewing it. Android Authority's Cubot S208 Review Overall it's a great phone Here's what I think of it (taken from a recent post of mine).... D'oh, only seeing this post now. I bought the S208 a couple of weeks ago so I could have given you the low-down before you bought! It's a decent phone for the price (£84.99 with Amazon). It's is very sleek and has a quality feel and finish about it. The 5" screen is very bright and clear. It's only a 2-point capacitive screen so not always as responsive as the big-branded phones which are 5-point capacitive, but it hasn't been a problem for me. It's just sometimes you have to tap a second time before the screen recognises the command. The battery is excellent. I thought this may have been a weakpoint but it's better than the battery in my old Xperia! The only negative I've found is that the camera really isn't great. In good light on a bright day with a steady hand, the 8MP camera will take a decent pic. However, it struggles in poor light and doesn't correct exposure when there is a bright background. A lot of pics tend to end up blurry. It's as if the shutter speed never goes quicker than 1/250 sec. Here's a shot taken of my messy desk with my old Xperia and the S208. Okay so it's not an interesting pic, but you can see that the detail and colour is better in the Xperia compared to the Cubot. Both cameras are 8MP by the way. Also, there is no flash. The spec will tell you there's an LED flash, but the LED fires up only to eliminate red-eye but doesn't re-flash, when the shutter is released, so you get a 5" dull grainy picture! I only came to realise this on Saturday when I was at a wedding trying to take a pictures of the bridal party. The case that comes in the box is pants, so get one of the cases on Amazon for a few quid. I got the Baiwei Leather Case and it is excellent. Overall it's a decent bit of kit for the money. I bought this because if I went for an upgrade with my phone provider I would have been tied up in a new 24-month contract at a higher monthly cost and I didn't want to get rippped off!

If your stepdaughter can stand having a non-mainstream branded phone, you should have a gander the Doogee DG800 Valencia. It's the same price as the Cubot S208 and it is the other phone I considered when I was buying. A workmate bought the Doogee on my recommendation and if I'm honest, I'm a bit jealous as it's nicer than the S208 and the camera (13MP) is way better. It also runs Android Kitkat as opposed to the S208's Gingerbread. The DG800 looks and feels a bit like an iPhone. My wife is getting one next month as she hates her Blackberry Q10 and her contract is about to run out. Android Authority's Review of Doogee DG800 Valencia Note: The author's comments regarding battery life do not seem to be the case with the phone purchased by my workmate. Possibly the firmware was upgraded since the review.
