Hi guys,

im new to the forum and looking to purchase a Coupe 20vT soon. Before hand though just reading up on them, getting myself up to speed on them etc

Was just wondering, how do the gearbox's hold up on them, what power are they good for? it seems the standard engine is capable of up to 350-400 bhp which is a a lot going through the front wheels? I used to own a Rover coupe turbo and the gearbox's were a particular weak point on!

Mine is 300bhp and the gearbox is fine.
I think the early 5 speed boxes are the strongest

I'm on standard engine and gearbox running near 420 bhp
There a few guys on here running 500+ on a standard gear box they hold up well to be fair . I don't know where this early gear box are stronger coming from but I destroy a early box with in a month and iv been on a later type box from 2 years now .

I have a late 6 speed box and have had no problems with it and the car is running 360bhp but I do have a spare just incase .

Really depends if you go out ragging it all the time!
I have a late 5 speed (soon to be a 6 speed) with 311 lb/ft torque been fine for a year but i dont ragg it except on a few rare occasions but always when warmed up!

The only people who im aware of who have broken boxes is JBT and Nigel oh and now LenzoFerrari and they are all above 400bhp! its certainly not a common thread on this forum

My coupe is over 480bhp and the only time blowing a gear box was at Santa pod (me n Nigel broke on same day). The track was too sticky and put too much strain on the gearbox. If your car wheelspins which I know we all try to stop it would be ok. Track use gear box is ok it will obviously eventually go but Santa pod (full bore starts on a very sticky track) is where the gear box will not last. I'm never doing 1/4 miles again because of it.

As for on the road perfectly fine as you shouldn't be driving like a lunatic on the road anyway.

300-400 on standard internals and a standard gearbox thats can handle it!!!

Can't wait to get one!

Gearboxes are good and very strong.

350+ and advised to have a Quaife conversion.

I haven't broken a box in 2 years now.
