Hi I have read loads of threads which seem to relate to LE or auto ds skirts and Dax's but he drilled his sills, so would like some clarification for genuine plus skirts
Looking at the inside of the skirt is it only in the channel that I apply bonding glue or do I need to do above it too where it touches at the top
Also what does the inside of a genuine LE look like never found a picture of that either is it the same but without the plug fixing points
Also has anybody slotted along the channel was wondering if it may be a good idea to prevent water that may sit above the channel that would have nowhere to go?
Any info pictures etc. appreciated
Cheers rich

The real side skirts have attachments and clips(avaliable on ebay) that go into the holes(the plus models have these already drilled in, normal models don't have them drilled) and a captive nut that goes under the car to support the skirts too.

Bonding the kit on is fine BUT if you decide to keep the car it has some complications.

- It can get a build up of dirt in the sill that is hard to clean and can cause corrosion and you cant easily remove them without breaking.

- If you need to have some body work done ie rust correction round the kick plate fixing points(a reasonable common problem now you will have hassel with the skirts bonded on.

The holes can be measured out easily with a pencil and the hole is 8mm.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_o...fiat+coupe+plus+skirt+clips&_sacat=0

These can be welded under the car as a bit of weight support

http://www.demon-tweeks.co.uk/karting/nuts-bolts-washers/pro-bolt-weld-on-chimney-nut

then get stainless long bolts with washers and nuts to support.

Have a look at Duffys refresh thread.

Cheers I would like to drill the sills but am paranoid about any swarf that may rust in there and don't know if you can get it out easily!
From your post I'm assuming you did this? How did it go?
Which bit do you mean by the kick plate? Under the plastic bit inside the door
If you have any pics do you have any that would be usefull
Appreciate your time to reply

Cheers Rich

Also interested in this. I have a set of Zender skirts to put on. They are stamped as Fiat Zender on the end so being unfamiliar, I am assuming they were some kind of dealer accessory.

The car I removed them from had self tappers into the ends of the sills (wheel arch) at both ends, glued along the top edge, and some support mouldings underneath that clamped to a seam in the floor.

The info on glue above is useful. Any hints on avoiding the self tappers into the bottoms of the arches would be very handy as want to avoid that at all costs.

Bit pushed for time but basically buy the fiat clips and they sit in the section shown in your own photo then measure from the inside of the leading edge of the skirt to the point of the clip that will be your horizontal measurement on the sill, i worked front to back.T

The front section has a lip that sits under the door near the hinge then measure down from the inside of this to the point on the clip, this will be your vertical hit. These two measurements will indicate the first hole.

The next bit is easy as all the vertical heights are the same so just measure from one clip point section to the next and mark them in pencil on the sill.

Double and triple check the measurements and also line the skirt up next to the sill and eyeball the marks so that it also looks correct.

Center punch the marks you have created the drill them out 1mm, 2mm, 3mm, 5mm 7mm then 8mm. files the rough edges round.

Use a small pipe attachment(you can make your own with drink bottles and a small hose drilled and masking tapped through the cap) on a vacuum cleaner, small magnet on a strong string or a sticky bit of wire to get the swarf out of the hole. Although not ideal its not the end of the world if a few bits remain in there...there are more problematic rust spots on the coop.

Use to touch up paint to cover the exposed metal.

Its a simple job just it takes time and careful checking to measure out.

If you have spare clips you can fit the skirt BUT when you detach it they usually break so buy extra if you want to do this.

The other clips that fit underneath will need welding on although you could drill/selftap a captive nut. This is not an exact science just use long bolts with washers that would sit in the holes on the underside of the skirts and work out where they touch the underside of the car. Scrap off any underseal and mark where they will fit. Then get some one to weld them on. Cut the bolts so that they fit and support the undersideof the skirts.

Check out Duffys threads in the project area, although his was a plus anyway there is a god picture of this 2nd bit with stainless bolts.

In Duffys thread it looked like he put a self tapper through the skirt near the wheel and possibly the back too.

You might need to repair you holding sections on your side skirts, Duffy covered this in his thread too. I am working on a guide to do this to its near factory but i haven't got round to it yet =( only done pics along the way.

.....Good luck.

Right that's almost all the holes done!
Just the rear hole on either side to do!

This location seems awfully close to the closing panel does anybody know where this hole comes out on the inside of the sill or the outside really need to know how this turns out as I may just blob a bit of glue on it, if it's close to the joint!

Any help would be great
Cheers

Just fitted my Zenders today. Will post pics next time I see the car when its daylight.

Because they were used, previous glue has created a small gap along the top of the skirt. Tried to remove the old glue on the skirt with a sharp blade, but not ideal and I was concerned about damaging the skirt.

I think when the tiger seal has set though, a small amount can be applied and worked into the gap to make it look OK (not that it is really noticeable) and keep it from being a moisture trap.

I will look tomorrow and take a photo H_R as mine is still being refurbished but the skirts are off.

Theoretically where ever the center of the fixing is is where the last hole will be but i understand sometimes it just seems wrong.

This post has some good pictures: helpful , the one from underneath the rear sill says that it won't poke through but as i said i will try to get a picture tomorrow. I would wait before fixing it without the hole in case it does peel away. There is always some satisfaction of doing it just so too!

Cheers guys really look forward to seeing some pictures and confirming that rear hole! thumb
Wombat did you fix studs underneath? it would be good to see what anybody has done with their fixings underneath in addition to those linked above!

I measured and marked everything out as you suggested t0m0
I then had an idea to double check everything hopfully this may help anybody else doing this as an addition to t0m0's guide I will add some more when finished

I had placed masking tape on the sills with double sided foam tape on top but left the top layer in place so the top side did not stick, this was in line with the clips
I then offered up the skirts in their correct location and firmly pushed where the clips are, I was hoping I would see an outline of the clip part but they are slightly recessed so it didn't mark but it did mark the solid top and bottom ridge that runs horizontally along the skirts
I used the marks to confirm my previous measurements all ok!
I then marked the extremes of position of the clips in the skirts then marked the centres of these (so there was some leeway of alignment if needed)
I then taped some matches on these lines, offered up the skirts again pressing firmly and this time leaving a vertical indentation! These were now my reference points I measured again and again and I could not seem to get any better accuracy any other way so I settled with the now cross marks
Then following t0m0's guide centre dot drilled hoovered etc.
I have then de-burred and painted with epoxy 121 getting loads inside and hopefully all around
I will apply cavity wax once the epoxy has cured fully
Skirts have been temporarily fitted (before epoxy) but only with a couple of clips on each one all ok so far and the location for the studs have been marked still undecided wether to captive nut or weld
That's where I'm upto so far just need to do the rear holes and the bottom studs and im done, hopfully soon!
laugh

I didn't fix studs underneath the car. The Zender skirts (must be the original Fiat Zender items as they have a stamp saying Fiat Zender) each have two long tabs that go under the car, and a plastic fixing that pushes up onto a floor seam and screws to the skirt.

I was a bit dubious, but they seem pretty solid when in place.

t0m0 That would be great if you could!

Wombat thats interesting! with all the zender kits knocking about i have never come across any threads discussing them!

I think i have decided to weld if i can get a welder sorted! if im stuck i may have to drill!

Cheers Rich
