A very sad day, popular Australian cricketer Phillip Hughes dies aged 25 as a result of head injuries suffered in a freak accident after being struck by a bouncer bowled by Sean Abbott, aged 22.

Thoughts not only go out to his family, but also to Sean Abbott.

Awful frown

Shocking!
I expected a bit of a stop in hospital and back on the field in 3 months.

I do feel for Sean too, knowing that a bad bounce from one of your balls did that.

Just dreadful. Anyone who has played cricket to any level knows that the ball can hurt, and concussion and stitches are an everyday occurrence. But death? I just can't take it in.

And poor Sean Abbott, as mentioned above; what can prepare you for that?

However appalling and tragic the injuries suffered by Jules Bianchi, he and his family and everyone involved in motorsport must have faced the prospect of it being a genuinely dangerous occupation. It doesn't help, but at least there must be an acknowledgement.

Losing a family member/team-mate/friend to cricket? Just can't get my head round it.

This is just sinking in for me, I played cricket in the 60s 70s 80s and the 90s from school to league, I've had plenty of bruises to toes fingers and body I still have a massive lump on my left wrist have split the webbing between my fingers all from cricket, but it's
just not right that someone loses their life playing cricket

Jim, you've summed up my feelings on this completely.

I'm not a cricket fan, indeed I had never heard of Phillip Hughes before his tragic death, but I am a fan of sport in general and I just cannot fathom that someone has died playing cricket; a skilful but seemingly 'safe' sport.

A terribly tragic accident and I feel for the bowler too, that must be one hell of a thing to have to live with.
