Due to the impending arrival of my new car (went for the 184 Leon for anyone who cares) I need to offload my old vehicle.

I've never sold a car properly before; I ran my first car into the ground and scrapped it, my second I sold to a mate and I've had company cars since.

I'm not really au fait with what medium would be best to get shot of a 15 year old Peugeot 306.

The bodywork isn't great (one pretty ugly dent, various dings - no rust though) but the engine is good. I've maintained it to keep it roadworthy but no more. It's had a complete new exhaust in the last 18 months as well as the regular consumables like tyres, discs and pads. It's passed every MOT since I've had it with no issues and it still returns 50mpg. Electrics all work too.

Realistically it's not going to be worth a lot, if someone offered me £500 I'd bite their hand off.

The obvious choice for selling a car is Autotrader but as far as I'm aware you pay for an advert for a period of time with no guarantee of it selling.

I'm thinking about eBaying it. I live in a road where parking one car is difficult enough so I don't really have the space to have it hanging around for ages.

I've sold a few things in eBay but never a car. Anyone had any issues or have a better idea?

eBay, I'd say.

Best way to sell a very cheap car in my experience is advert cards on local supermarket notice boards. Also used gumtree and autotrader with no problems at all.

Try Gumtree as it's quick and free to advertise as far as I know.

An advert on the car windows, clearly stating the Mot expiry date, price and mobile phone number should see it gone pretty quick.

People that do these adverts don't always make them clearly enough and it puts people off - do yours properly and it'll be gone within a couple of weeks I reckon.

Obviously, you'll need to drive around in it or park it in a prominent spot for the advert to be noticed too laugh

But beware - many 'prominent sites' have byelaws prohibiting the offering of goods for sale in the street. North London collected loads of fines that way a year or two ago...

Stick it on eBay.

You've got most of the wording in your 4th paragraph. Emphasise the economy, and if you've had big jobs like the belts done, mention them.

On a serious note Ebay is good and quick - but watch out for the timewasters and tyre kickers! I have had a number of bad experiences mostly involving folk who say they will pay cash, then turn up having won the auction and offer less then the hammer price...

So some tips

Describe the car not your opinion of it. If you say "excellent tyres" and there is room for debate some clever dick will use that as a lever when they actually see it. If necessary measure the depth of tread! Just say what it is and the features it has.

You can specify that buyers with less than a feedback of, say, 10 are excluded.

State clearly how you want to be paid. I always go for bank transfer these days - no paypal fees and no cash risk. If you accept cash demand a paypal deposit within 24 hours of the ad finishing.

Use all 12 pictures. Front, back, sides, inside and any horrid bits.

There's lots more but notwithstanding the ebay fees it is probably the quickest and cheapest way of doing it.

Then be prepared to answer some really daft questions...

Thanks for all the useful info. That Fiat eBay advert just made my day! laugh

I'll probably stick it on Gumtree for a week or two before my new car comes, if I get no joy with that I'll eBay it and let it go for whatever.
