After removing my number plate lights i came across what is apparently a very common problem on the coupe, severely deteriorated damaged lenses and corroded connections, one of mine was irreparable and as it is almost impossible to source new ones I decided to make an alternative using leds I used a large 3 led strip which I encapsulated within an acrylic tube using resin to fully seal it from the elements, this was solvent welded to a 3mm acrylic strip which is slightly larger than the standard lens, a 1mm neoprene gasket cut to size, soldered spade connectors to make an easy connection to the existing socket and a purpose made shroud to cover the connections. Obviously there is no E mark, but I would be very surprised if this was picked up, on a Mot test. Typical number plate light Standard and led Two led The units

I plundered these from Thelma. The only difference being lens detail and numbering. One of them has the usual damage which I think is due to heat from the bulb making the plastic brittle. I planned to keep the housings but ditch the bulb holders, fitting LED units stood off from the rubber back.

Good image showing the differance between incandescent and led.
Do you have any info on what LEDs you used, or their mcd output?.

Group buy Thanks for thumbs up joe, I suppose I could make some to order if anyone was interested I would be, depending on cost I know one of mine hasn't worked for years and have no idea if the other one still works I might fix them if someone like you just sorted them out and sent them to me to plug in

Well, Robotrish was kind enough to send me a set of his 'sorted out' prototypes, which were literally just 'plug and play'. Got around to fitting them today and they are brilliant Very happy with them and I now, finally, have two working number plate lights. Thank you very much Robotrish, they are very much appreciated

is this only a service for the female coupe owners robo ? I decided to send a set of my first efforts (the latest one are even better in my opinion) to a long time forum member Theresa (who has kindly made a donation to charity for them) and asked her if she would give a completely unbiased opinion of these light units regarding ease of fitting how they functioned and if it was something that forum members might be interested in, I'm delighted that she likes them. I would be prepared to make another set of the latest type and send to another long time member to test and appraise as a second opinion ( with a view to them purchasing if they wanted to keep them) and if there was any interest as I mentioned in a previous post I would consider making them to order
