Having been named as executor in my fatther in laws will I have the task of dealing with probate application etc and although the guidance notes seem clear enough I was wondering if any of you chaps who have been through the process have any advice for anyone facing this task? Luckily the value of the estate is below the IHT threshold.
I've been through it but too long ago to be relevant, I'm afraid. As I recall there wasn't a lot to it apart from identifying and valuing all the estate, making sure it was distributed correctly, and swearing to this effect to a commissioner for oaths. I think he had to lend me some gold coins so that I could give them to him to make it legal, or something.
Yes. Request half a dozen authentic copies of the probate document to be issued at the same time as the original. Many organisations won't accept photocopies.
When you do release one take a note of where you've sent it and get them to send it back wherever possible. The number of copies will depend how many organisations you have to deal with but I found 6 covered it and it was worth it even though they charge for each one.
