Horrible to see/hear this kind of thing once more. Not much left of the plane from what I can see on the BBC. Wonder why there was no distress signal. As a Father my heart especially goes out to those poor parents sat at Dusseldorf Aiport.....

Wonder why there was no distress signal. Could be down to the saying: 1) Aviate 2) Navigate 3) Communicate They may have just run out of time for the 3rd option, especially if they were furiously running through emergency procedures. Always makes me feel sick when i read theres been a plane crash, i cant imagine the hell of not knowing whats happening and the loss of loved ones that these families are going through.

There's been a few suicide pilots in recent history.
Very sad if that is the case.

Pointless and extremely unlikely speculation, though... the Pprune lot are I think merely pointing out that such an event *could* happen. I'd understood it was based upon the cockpit recordings

I've seen a few air crash investigation episodes which featured suicide. The senior pilot can command the first officer to leave the cockpit under certain circumstances. Rate of decent is probably the last thing in the mind in those circumstances. More over looking for a good target to ensure you don't survive!

According to one report a pilot can only get "locked out" if the one remaining in the cockpit manually changes the code whilst he's gone. I can't think of any reason other than suicide for doing that, unless the excluded pilot was some threat. Tragic whatever the circumstances though, all thoughts are with their families and friends

It seems there is a code access panel to open the door but it can be over ridden by a switch in the cockpit! The anti terror procedures will have to be looked at again and or a member of crew will have to swap over if pilots need a comfort break! Their last few minutes must have been shear hell

Indeed Ali.
If this was deliberate, the fact he was able to keep the pilot out looks irrelevant. It was the easiest way to achieve what he wanted.
Not being able to do it would not have prevented it. Swapping over with someone else or the other pilot not being able to be locked out would just have meant that person would have been killed/disabled (bearing in mind he was prepared to kill all on the plane).
Does our law condemn a man without first hearing him to find out what he has been doing? (John 7:51)

A terrible event. Based on what I have read on here(seen no news today) was there any passenger communication to the outside world?
Let's hope any suffering was short .
Thoughts are with the family's.
