The local council where I work have just started sending out 'litter enforcement officers' who can issue an on the spot fine of £75 if they catch you dropping litter.

It goes without saying that littering is wrong but I do wonder how these litter enforcement officers are going to issue a fine.

Officer - "Hey, I've just seen you drop that crisp packet. I'm going to issue you a £75 fine."

Offender - "Ok."

Officer - "What's your name?"

Offender - "I'm not telling you."

Officer - "Please?"

Offender - "No."

Is this just a monumental waste of money? (especially seeing as it's been subbed out to some third party)

Very odd. In a slightly similar vein, I saw a group of people in Orange hi-viz tabards in Cambridge the other day; they were cleaning railings with wire brushes. On the backs of the tabards were the words "Community Payback"
Since when did Misfits become reality?

Our town (Maidenhead) did something similar, but very much aimed primarily at smokers and their fag butts.

A friend of mine got a fine (£30) i think it was for putting the fag out on the floor. She complained a lot at the time and to us afterwards.

I thought it was brilliant as so many cities and towns are filthy because of fag butts and chewing gum.

The best thing about it was she was next to the bin with a special part for extinguishing cigarettes, but she was to lazy to walk 5m to use it.

I'm all in favour of anything to curb Litter, dog crap, fag buts. It messes with my blood pressure.

Just got back from a few Baltic countries and the streets put ours to shame.

I've had a go at dog walkers on my road when they think I haven't noticed they've just walked away from a steaming pile. Also resorted to litter picking with a big black bin bag. People thought I was doing community service!

As always its the same culprits each time.

My friend, drive coupe and keep calm!!

Our time has come and gone!!
The age of chivalry, manners and responsibility for your own actions disappeared a long time ago.

Do, as i do, grit your teeth and carry on. If you must react just Snarl - they would probably think you were rabied and think twice about defecating on your drive or their dogs for that matter.

I agree with the sentiment of this scheme, just not the implementation.

If you're the sort of person who is prepared to throw rubbish in the street then I imagine you'll be quite comfortable telling some uniformed (looks like a traffic warden) lackey to eff off.

Well done for keeping your area tidy, Tobe. You shouldn't need to do it, but folks like us redress the balance.

I mow a patch of council grass near my house because it became a magnet for litter and dog muck when it got scruffy.

I still hold doors open for folks when appropriate. It's nice to get a positive reaction from likeminded people once in a while.

Keep smiling folks and giving out the positive vibes because we need to keep the Great in Britain somehow.
