Cheapest option would be something like Ryanair to Gothenburg or Oslo then take a rental car.
Driving would mean Calais and that route isn't looking good at the moment. It is also a rather long way to Sweden from Calais. Not good if you don't have plenty of spare time or money in your pocket.
Don't dither with booking flights too. If you see a good price book it ASAP. Prices move about a lot and can rise rapidly as departure looms.

As mentioned above, fly to Oslo (BA/SAS/others) or Rygge (Ryanair). Then rent a car or jump on a train. Train from Oslo Central Station to Karlstad Central Station is around £45. Not sure about transport from Rygge to Oslo, or to Sweden for that matter.
Otherwise, plane to Gothenburg, and then rent a car or take the train.

Shame I only just spotted this thread as my wife is from Kristinehamn which is half an hour's drive from Karlstad.
We travel there frequently and usually fly with Ryanair from Stansted to Stockholm Västerås. This airport is further to the west of Stockholm so the drive to Karlstad is just over 2 hours.
Driving is very easy in Sweden but speed limits are generally lower so it takes a while. I just drove across Sweden a couple of weeks ago and counted 16 speed cameras between Gothenburg and Karlstad, but only a few between Karlstad and Arlanda. They are all sign posted though, so just be vigilant!
Fire away if you have any more queries as I know this part of Sweden very well.
