We completed on a house on Friday and obviously want to get it insured ASAP. However, when I tried to get it insured with More Than, who insure our car (to get the reduction offered with multiple policies), they said they won't insure it as we aren't moving in for a month (we have paid for our current tenancy until December and want to decorate the new place before we move).
It seems that it is a more tricky proposition getting insured on unoccupied properties - can any forum guru recommend a company that will do so?

Almost all insurers will provide unoccupied cover for 30 days on a standard policy.

If you need longer than this then it still isn't particularly unusual and I would have thought that most insurers should be able to provide cover (probably at a higher price).

Thousands of people go on long travelling holidays, work abroad for part of the year, extend the property and move out while the work's going on, etc. Almost all student landlords will have their properties empty for two months in the summer.

Moneysupermarket has a page dedicated to non-standard home insurance.

Towergate insurance will insure unoccupied property as I found with my mums bungalow which took some tie to sell after I moved her closer to the family. There are some points to bear in mind regards regular checks on an empty property and it will cost more obviously than std insurance.

Thanks people; I think More Than are a typical "vanilla" insurance company, who won't look at anything outside the absolute norms to enable them to offer good rates.
Unfortunately, it could be up to 6 weeks before we move in, so 30 days won't cut it.
Of course, once we move, we'll be screwed on the insurance for the house we are renting...

Tower gate do offer month by month insurance cover if that helps

I ended up calling More Than back and spoke to someone with a bit more common sense. As long as the property isn't unoccupied for more than 60 days in total over the year (it won't be), then we are fine. £109 for 12 months.
