We are on its southwards flight path when heading south so see it often. Flew over today. Much higher than usual. Great sight. heading or coming back from wings and wheels today , i'll be back down there tomorrow for a second viewing .

Loved the Vulcan, ever since I sat at the tip of the Rock and watched one of the last active squadrons, doing touch and goes in and out of Gibraltar Strip back in the early eighties. Majestic aircraft.

The display at Dunsfold yesterday was less "energetic" than a few recent ones I've seen footage or (RIAT in particular) However, as it came in for its first pass, it lit the afterburners AND vented them, which made the most eerie and spectacular noise I've ever heard - bit like a Tie fighter from Star Wars Horrible weather for photography though - slightly hazy, duff light and complete white-out for the sky Best of a pretty bad lot: and one of some bloke in a Fiat....

and one of some bloke in a Fiat.... The commentary is always rather pretentious at this event: On the afternoon run the commentator said Here's a fiat coupe being chased down by a GT40, and we all know what the outcome of that is going to be Prat. Apart from that, I agree the noise made by the Vulcan on its first pass was utterly eerie.

We must all do our part for the planet. I unplugged a row of electric cars that nobody was using. I even unplugged my own.

I saw it, and thought it was really good. I've read Vulcan 607 book - the story of the trip to the Falklands, so it was interesting to see the original pilots being interviewed. GM has grown on me in recent years. Used to find him pain annoying. Amazing footage. Also liked the "aborted take-off." And who can't like the Olympus howl ! However, as it came in for its first pass, it lit the afterburners AND vented them, which made the most eerie and spectacular noise I've ever heard - bit like a Tie fighter from Star Wars
Minor plane geek nit pick sorry...- I may be wrong, but I didn't think the Vulcan had afterburners (reheat). I thought they were reserved for Concorde. Was it just full throttle howl??

No, the Vulcan didn't have afterburners.
If you are into big, loud old jets, being big, loud and old, get along to Bruntingthorpe on one of the fast taxi days, a range of lightnings, buccs, canberra even a nimrod, victor and VC10 tearing up the runway.

The way I understood it last night was the howl noise came in at about three quarter throttle, due to the massive air volume rushing into the engines.
I thought Guy was a lot better in last nights program than the Spitfire one.
But we have to remember that a lot of film footage gets left on the cutting room floor.
I like him.
But that Vulcan wow!

Didn't see this one, will go look it up on catch up. I was born and bred in Biggin Hill so always got to watch and hear this wonderful every year at the air fair. I did see Guy Martin's episode on the Mosquito. Also another huge favourite of mine. Don't know if this is coincidence http://www.peoplesmosquito.org.uk/2015/11/13/collaboration-with-the-vulcan-to-the-sky-trust/try and find this episode if you can. It seems this plane wants to flip itself over as soon as it leaves the ground. making take off very interesting !!

Howl or roar, I always understood it to be dependant on the engine type. With the speed / amount of air being different on the early / late planes. I always liked the big Vulcan but for me the victor was more impressive.
Gone Audi mad!
