I was about to ask Flea to make a map for my 20VT when turbo decided to start giving up (blue smoke on boost). It is one of Chinese copies of GT2871 .64 with journal bearing. I am going to get t rebuild with Mellet parts, 360* bearing, staggered seals. That turbo makes 1 bar of boost a 3550rpm in 4th and I want it to be faster than that. Since I need to rebuild it why not upgrade it for a faster spool, right? What are my options?

Current spec as far as I know:
- cold side: 71>54,13mm .60
- hot side: 60>64A/R

that's laaaaaaggy....

My 0.64AR GT2871 used to give 1 bar just before 3,000rpm and 2 bar by 3,500rpm

My GT3071 gives over 1 bar by 3,500

Your only options are to change the wheels for something that will spool faster - upgrading to a roller bearing CHRA is probably not an option

Personally, I'd recommend ditching the Chinese copy and getting a proper Garret GT2871 with a roller bearing core and a billet compressor wheel

Wow. I didn't realise that it is soooo laggy.

Ditching it is currently not an option but upgrading its parts / wheels is indeed. I am already talking about upgrading the compressor wheel to a billet 11 blades something that can be found in garrett's gtx series. I also remember that someone mentioned about porting waste gate thou I got no idea what's that about tongue

Porting the wastegate helps prevent boost creep (ie when the wastegate port is so small that it can't vent enough exhaust gasses to keep the boost at the desired level). My 3071 creeps, even though the wastegate is ported - I can set it to base boost, but its at 1.4bar by the redline

GTX wheel will make quite a difference

If your looking for upgrades speak to flea about the billet wheels he has been getting made there meant to be very good and he also prefers them to the gtx wheels for a few reasons but ask him to explain them.

This china turbo has nothing to do with original GT2871r , not just bearings realy.
If its starts to smoke, parts are ready to throw into bin. No wasting money on new bearings(thats only half of parts which are worn).
This china crap have very old TB04B compressor wheel, which makes very slow spool and even you will spool it on high gears, it surge as hell.
Wheel is also large itself, so machining compressor wheel for another better spooling wheel is impossible. And also cost too much.
My experience from 3 cars of this product.

My suggestion with limited money, is buy better designed(mainly not with this compressor wheel, and with .64 turbine housing) china GT2871, test it as it or mount new bearings+360 and rebalance it.

If you have some money, you are mechanical skill limited, buy one of FC pref. hybrids.
You want tune from him, he give you best advices, no doubt.

Hello.

...and how many kilometers is that Chinese turbo?

A maximum pressure that was working?

I also have a turbo like yours

About 6k miles and all of it at 0.7b, then I set it to 1.3b for tests, then a new 3" exhasut including DP and immediately it started to smoke. Many people run chinese copies for years, even in drifting and they last. There is no rule how long they will last.

Cheap turbos or Chinese copies, generally have poor quality of materials, but with a restrictor oil can last a lot more miles

Fact is, I won't be buying another one and even if I decide to get mine refurbed I will use a genuine Garrett CHRA for that.

Edit - a friend of mine will inspect my turbo today / tomorrow and I will let you know his feedback on Chinese turbos wink

Yes, sorry. The turbo shop said that they saw many Chinese turbos but this one was definitely the cheapest copy of all. It was rebuilt with Mellet parts and sold to recover some money which I can now put towards a purchase of proper turbo.

Edit - this copy has nothing similar with a GT2871r. It is a mix or rather miss match of different turbochargers. There are decent Chinese turbos out there but the one from turbo-parts.de is definitely not one of them.
