I have been thinking of upgrading to an external tank filter for my Juwel Vision 180.

The item I have been thinking of going for is the Tetra EX-Plus 1200 and although I know it is larger than actually required I understand a larger filter would be better? Or would it be better to save money and go for the smaller EX-Plus 600?

Does anyone here have any knowledge on these things, and indeed anywhere I could find one of these for a good price?

Thanks smile

Fishy Dave is your man! Not sure he posts that regularly anymore though. No harm in dropping him a PM though.

i think filtration depends on what you have in the tank/stocking levels as much as tank size.

I used to keep fish, but fortunately they all died before me. Read into that what you will!!

Regarding filters, I found that an internal one of the type that sucks the water down through the shingle and a plastic mat was much, much better than that inadequate little box-in-the-corner-of-the-tank type.

Was that an external one? Not sure now. The memory is going.

A larger filter is always better, but anything that deals with over your tank size of 180 litres will be fine.

Eheim are also good for external filters. I used to have the older version of this

It lasted well for years, but unfortunately one day, it did start leaking and I didn't notice for a couple of days.
I walked into the sitting room and saw that half the water had disappeared from the tank and realised that the other 95 litres was under the laminate flooring, etc cry

I went back to the internal filtering system after that (one of my tanks is a Juwel Trigon 190).

I'd still recommend Eheim though, but like any other external filtering system, keep an eye out for leaks!
