Corridor of Uncertainty
Back in April, I replaced the runflat tyres on our R55 Mini Clubman Cooper S for conventional Pirelli rubber. The improvement was massive in terms of ride, roadholding and general confidence.
However, I recently checked the recommended tyre pressures for the wheel/tyre combo we have (205x45R17), as indicated on the door jamb.
Supposedly, under light/medium load, the tyres should be 2.6 bar all round. That seems a bit high to me, but I set them all as advised. Since then, the feel has been much worse, the car is twitchy and grip is down - I regularly get the traction control light coming on, which never happened before. I know it's been colder and wetter, but I don't think that's the whole story.

The trouble is, because the car is fitted with run-flats as standard, I can't find verifiable figures for what conventional tyres should be set to.

Is my best bet to talk to Kwik-Fit or another tyre professional, or is there a website that covers the difference between runflat and "normal"?

Interesting question. I've no idea but maybe a flick through some beemer forums if you haven't already might glean some info.

I've tried a fairly superficial search, but so far, the specific question (and answer!) has eluded me...

38 psi seems very high for a car like that. Try going down to 32 and monitor the wear pattern.

I just wondered if there might be a general consensus along the lines of drop them 10psi or some such similar.

I guess you're down to szkoms suggestion. I'd go 34 front 32 rears and see how she goes.

I'm certainly inclined to try lower pressures; all the advice for all different wheel/tyre sizes suggests the same pressure front and rear, so I might try 32 or 34 psi all round.
Thanks for the suggestions, gents.

It's the easiest way to do it. Providing you have a clean wear pattern then you can be sure the right amount of tyre is touching tarmac.

Seems ok. Possibly a bit more on the front outer shoulders, but I'd expect that.

I've had the same problem on my car, surely the forums have a pressure they all work with? Mine are 38 at the back and 40 front. still feels like a magic carpet compared with the run flats.
