About 4pm yesterday myself and the wife were doing what we normally do once we flick through Netflix: argue about what to watch. The above series was promoted and seemed alright so we agreed to watch ten minutes of the first episode and see how we feel. We finished the final episode last night about 3am after ten hours straight and I was up at five for work shocked . I can honestly say that is the most intense, gripping and powerful thing I have ever watched before in my entire life. It just beggars belief. If you have a Netflix account I urge you to watch it, just please have ten hours ahead of you or you're going to be very tired in work the next day!
It's a true crime documentary about a miscarriage of justice between Steven Avery and Manitowoc county Sheriff's department, Wisconsin. I don't want to give anything else away. Bravo Netflix bow

Yes indeed, on episode 4, my suggestion would be to look at what extra curricular boys clubs the Montiuac police, DA and the Court Judge all belong to.

We signed up to Netflix yesterday evening and watched the first 3 episodes. Some of the conflicts of interest and questionable procedures of the Manitowoc PD were almost laughable, not to mention the relentless bullying interviewing techniques used on Avery's nephew (and others).
Having said that - and despite my inclination to side with Avery, I'm mindful that the programme has its own agenda. I'm keen to carry on watching!

I think the agenda of the film is not about whether Steven Avery is innocent or guilty but questions and highlights the ability of the State to adopt such malevolent tactics in their prosecution, I think it shows the 'system' is broken.

Any of the irregularities highlighted could lead to a miscarriage of justice yet the DA and Judge continue to plough on to make the 'system' work. If there wasn't two men in prison as a result of this farce it would border on comical.

I think you're right, submariner, but all media has an agenda and it's not a bad idea to keep that in mind. That doesn't mean it's a *bad* agenda!

I'm just starting episode 4 - it really cleverly reels you in.

It's like a Coen Brothers film - at least the characters are.

We watched episode 4 last night. MrsC Googled the case and said she didn't want to carry on watching - right up until the (excellent) title sequence. Then she was hooked again.

It just moves from one breathtaking revelation to another - if the characters were in a fictional drama, you'd dismiss them as too far-fetched. Brendan's lawyer, Len, for example is straight out of Breaking Bad.

I think the Coen Brothers thing is partly to do with the almost Fargo-esque accents.

If you're poor and uneducated never cross the law enforcement in small-town USA!

As a slight aside - we've just joined Netflix - plenty on there to watch and great for the kids but I'm slightly disappointed by the lack of 'current' releases....

You're right about Fargo, Jim - but there's more to it than just that - it's the type of characters.

It's so funny how this sucks you in. There's been a couple of occasions I nearly escaped it last night and then, as you say, there's a new revelation. You'd struggle to write something fictional that did it so well.

Corrected that for you.

I'm only one episode in so far and already the saying truth is stranger than fiction comes to mind.

Glad everyone's enjoying it. I did a lot of reading online after I watched the series. I'm not so sure he's innocent but he deserves a retrial at the very least. I suspect the jury at that point will be biased in the completely opposite way now that the series is all over the media. Will justice prevail if so?

Oh and Jim, you're right about Len Kachinsky. He's straight out of the worst movie involving sleazy lawyers!
