No, but it's hard to see. It looks like a dot matrix print onto a chunk of metal sticking out from the side about half way down the block next to the clutch bellhousing below the exhaust manifold (ie: on the far right of the engine). I just replaced my coolant hose to the turbo and once the other hoses are out of the way too, you can see the engine number. It's two lines of characters, the first is the engine type, eg: 175.820.0.0 for a 20v turbo, and the second is the number, and you may need to clean up the metal surface to see it.

But good luck in your quest... I have a feeling i will need it... going down that road. The engine is in good condition as far as i can see. I'm going to do some further checks today just for my own peace of mind. I'll do a compression test this week while i'm doing the cambelt, water pump, aux belts and all the tensioners. I'm still umming and ahhing as to whether or not i'll change the cam phase sensor. It's an expensive part, has anyone here ever had one fail? I know it makes sense to change it while i'm in there... I wonder if there is a bosch alternative or similar. Anyway, thanks for the advice on engine number searches. Although I probably won't walk that path, it is still valuable info...

Thanks for this info. I'm going to have a look and see if I can find it. Even if it serves no other purpose than cleaning that particular part of the engine... it'll have been worth it!

I wonder if there is a bosch alternative or similar. Yes I've had one fail and so have several other people. I describe it as being like Russian Roulette: you know the sensor is failing (there's a bullet in the gun) but most times you spin it (the engine, or the gun barrel) it starts OK (there's no bullet) but sooner or later...the engine won't start and the injector light will come on. You can keep trying and it might work, but it might not. Actually that's better than Russian Roulette, since you do at least get to try again after it's failed once For some reason they tend to fail shortly after a cam belt change, perhaps they don't like being disturbed, I don't know, but it means you effectively have to do the cam belt twice. I always get a new sensor fitted but I'm not bothered if it's not Bosch, they can be bought much cheaper than the £80 or more commonly seen, don't forget the same part numbers (7777344, 46469912) are used on many Alfa models too

The engine number is in there somewhere... See that small hose, third one along from the right, with a dirty white paint mark on it? Push that over to the right and get in real close... The engine type is not what I said above, it's 175A3.000 in this case, and engine number is 0351915 - pretty hard to see even when cleaned up a bit!

Thank you for all the help with this. I've not been able to respond until this evening. I'm really hoping life calms down soon so that I can spend some proper time on my new found love. I've been doing little bits inbetween a lot of work. Getting to know the car. As per the advice, I decided to replace the Cam Phase sensor, there is just no way my mind would have let me rest if i'd have overlooked it.
