As mentioned at the bottom of that linked page the Government website has been updated and now says: Driving a vehicle that’s failed
You can take your vehicle away if your MOT certificate is still valid.
If your MOT has run out you can take your vehicle to:
have the failed defects fixed a pre-arranged MOT test appointment
In both cases, your vehicle still needs to meet the minimum standards of roadworthiness at all times or you can be fined.
From https://www.gov.uk/getting-an-mot/after-the-testSo it seems you can still drive it if your previous MOT is still valid and the new failure points aren't major enough to make it unroadworthy.

With no currrent MOT, I always thought you could drive to and from a pre-arranged MOT but now it says you can only drive to and not from. However, it says that once failed, you can "take" your vehicle (why doesn't it say "drive" ?) to be repaired. It doesn't say that the repairs have to be done at a (trade) garage, so in my case I will pretty much always drive home from a failed MOT, fix the issues, then drive back for an MOT, no problem.

that's only valid if you have a current MOT, in other words you better take your car for early MOT in case it fails as that gives you time to address the issues and not MOT the car on its actual expiry date. Otherwise the car will have no valid MOT and you cant legally drive the car away and will need a trailer

Some of you may allready know that here in France we get 2months to repair a car after a failure. And I mean we can drive it also in those 2 months.
