Hi all,

My old k&n cone has become very tatty and is actually coming apart in places. I might as well try a different cone if possible, can anybody suggest a decent cone filter that will fit the 57i pipework? Any comments on quality and sound would be helpful too.

Cheers
John

Apexi is good, and you can get adpators to fit it if needed, unfortunately hard to get hold of, and expensive.

Don't get foam - my last ITG foam filter collapsed resulting in no boost at all.

I currently run a £30 Chinese cone filter - works fine. smile

Hey Suba,

thanks for the advice, you still got the rx7. Coindidently I ordered an apexi the other day, I took a risk on one from ebay described as genuine with good pictures of it and the seller has good reviews. Most on there are cheap fakes so fingers crossed it is actually a genuine one. I was very tempted by the pipercross venom universal kit after hours of reading posts about cone filters without any enclosure suffering from heat soak. I decided the pipework for the 57i kit keeps the filter away from the engine and it could all be a waste of money anyway. The scary thing is I think I'm getting the tuning bug again but I doubt it'll go much further.....

Whilst I'm here, I have a sip that's been sitting on top a cupboard in my kitchen for over 5yrs I think it's 3inches id at both ends. Do they make any difference in performance when fitted and what's the difference in sound like with one?

Cheers
John

Yep - still have it, can't bring myself to part with it - just too much fun as a weekend car.

I really dont buy into the heatsoak idea with filters - they pull a lot of air from all over the place on a turbo when boosting hard, not just the warm air in the engine bay, and if you have a decent intercooler it's hardly going to matter if it's a degree or so higher. on the RX it sits behind the intercooler and rad, and right next to the engine - only place for it, and works fine.

SIP makes a little difference, sounds like the intake is not in your glove box anymore on a coupe, biggest downside is the filter is right down low - gets crud and water from puddles all over it unless you rig up a decent shield for it.

Thanks Suba. I was debating if I should fit the sip and stick the apexi on it but it sounds like they don't really add anything performance wise. I might give it a go just to see what it sounds like, I have an oe evo 7,8,9 intercooler on the car so have options for where I route it.

I always liked the rx7's nearly bought one a long time back.

Thanks for your help!

John

No worries - still miss the coupe.

There's a Scotts Green 20v NA that parks opposite my house now, needs some work done on it but makes me feel nostalgic daily! cool

I miss my old Scott's green 20vt a lot, think I remember spotting you out in Raynes Park / Kingston many moons ago in your 20vt when you had it.

So the apexi filter turned up last week and it looked really good and felt solid for a filter. Unfortunately I've returned it as two of the threads for the adaptor were not allowing the screws to be tightened fully. I suggested it could be a fake which the seller denies but reluctantly has offered the refund.

I was going to order one from the well known Jap performance parts suppliers (who's name escapes me at the moment) but I was too impatient and have decided to try a ramair universal sealed/enclosed cone. I'm think it'll allow me to fit the sip without worrying too much about puddles and water getting on the filter and I'm interested in trying something a bit different.

Try Apex Performance, who are UK based firm that supply into the Jap scene.

I ordered one direct from Japan a company called nengun performance. It took a few weeks to arrive but it was worth the wait.

Negun are pretty good - but you are importing... not ideal.

Ram air have good reputation, but I will never use a foam filter again after having one collapse on me, literally resulting in zero boost.

Cheers Gunzi, I did almost order it from Nengun before ordering the ramair. Suba I hear you about foam filters the ramair ones seem to be widely used which is why I risked it plus if I do put my sip on I don't have to worry about puddles as much as it's enclosed. It does look a bit cheaply made but it was cheap compared to the Apexi! It sounds nice on the k&n 57i pipework and it came with adaptors which made fitting very easy. The car feels quick at the moment but I put that down to the cold weather, I just wish the roads weren't so slippery!

fair enough - if you loose boost / power just be sure to check the filter is not loosing shape or collapsing in on itself. smile

Cheers Suba I'll keep an eye on it, it's cheap enough to replace every few years. If it does collapse i might keep it to myself though as I think there'll be a big fat 'i told you so' waiting for me! laugh

smile My ITG foam filter was fine for years, then literally collapsed in on itself and resulted in zero boost.
