Or alternatively, what features are worth bothering about for a new monitor, for example screen type, brand, response speed or resolution.

A while ago (actually nearly 18 months ago) I started thinking about getting new monitors for my PC due to the likes of this 27" 1920x1080 at £180 becoming in reach budget wise. I had a think and as I already had a pair of 22" monitors at the same resolution I decided that I'd look for something better. This of course upped the budget significantly so I decided to hang fire, start slimming down the record collection on Ebay and call the budget £800 for a pair of monitors. This now brings me back to the title question as I've now emptied 2 boxes of vinyl that have sat idle in the garage and spent our entire 6 years at the last house in the loft and my mouse finger is getting itchy....

At the top end of my budget is a UHD 27" IPS display for ~£395. Is it worth the extra to get IPS and the higher resolution? I work from home for a lot of the week so having something easy on the eye is important. I don't really bother with PC games so response time isn't that much of a priority. I like having two monitors as it means I can quickly shift 4/8 applications around with shortcuts. Soooo....

Q1 Is IPS worth paying extra for?

If not then this non-IPS Samsung @ ~£345 will do fine. If I'm going to be spending this much then I'd like something that I'll be happy to keep for a while (which I appreciate is not a given in the computer environment) but is the resolution so important which brings me to...

Q2 Is resolution important in my case?

My working day typically involves standard office fare such as spreadsheets, I do a bit of programming and a bit of 3D CAD on the side. If I drop the UHD criteria then the budget drops to the middle ground of either this 2560x1440 IPS @ ~£315 or this 2560x1440 non-IPS Iiyama @~£295. I've always like Iiyama as a monitor brand but that dates back to using them for CRT CAD monitors years ago so I'm not sure if that loyalty is justified nowadays. My current monitors are Iiyama ones but does this matter? I tend to avoid the likes of BenQ who I perceive as "budget".. Is this brand loyalty/prejudice relevant nowadays? Back in the days of CRT CAD monitors it was down to the actual tube manufacturers of whom there weren't that many (3 IIRC).

Q3 Which brands are good or is this irrelevant?

Finally, I've used twin monitors at work and home for around twenty years so it would be quite difficult to get me out of the habit but if I can be convinced then either 34" flat thingy @~£530 or 34" curved thingy @£~650 could be options.

I appreciate that my timing (i.e. just before the forum moves) is questionable but thought I'd get my thoughts down on paper (?) tonight. As always, any suggestions are more than welcome. I should probably add that I'm leaning towards display port as an interface, I don't need speakers but a thin bezel and height adjust would be nice.

Under the influence so sorry if this is a naff idea but why not simply order online and try them out? You can return the goods without justification within 2 weeks.
I suspect you'll like all of the screens you have linked. smile

If you're after a recommendation, the Dell QHD monitors are excellent and come with a factory calibration certificate.

Thanks for the replies, I hadn't forgotten about this thread, I just seemed to have put my savings pot back a bit by buying vinyl instead of selling it. rolleyes

Buying and sending back seems a fair bit of hassle and I'm guessing it will cost me the return postage each time. Of course return postage is trivial in comparison to overall budget.

I've used smaller Dell monitors (24" IIRC) at work before and they were nice and easy on the eyes. They come out fairly expensive so budget wise I could only go to QHD not 4k at the last time of looking (which was a month ago).

Everything I've read elsewhere points towards IPS so it looks like I will going down that route. That leaves the resolution as the next thing to consider.

Although saying that, non IPS DELL would be this QHD at £389 or this at £391 although the bezel isn't as nice (for nice read as close to invisible as possible) on the latter and it may exceed the available desktop mounting space being 29".

A full blown tick all the boxes DELL is still waaay out of range at £635.

My soft spot for Iiyama is going to add this at £385 into the mix. Sod everything else I've said.

Mmmmm (just one obviously)
Phillips 43" IPS

I've starting reading a few reviews as I'm now close to having the spare funds to do this, the crux of what I've read so far is yes to IPS but proabbly not necessary to 4k as the sizes I'm looking are relatively small.
That leaves the Dell QHD as one of the favourites as quality aside I like the idea of turning then 90 degrees and putting soemthing mahoosive in the middle at some point in the fututre.

I'll need to upgrade my current GTX750 next as this won't handle the required resolutions, I make it a GTX950 or upwards for QHD and GTX1060 and upwards for 4k.

I've been using 24" 1920x1200 IPS screens since 2004. Still works. I just got a new IPS Screen.
I've liked the Dell screens. My first was over a thousand pounds. I Just gave it to my mum.
Just do it.

Edit: For me curved is a no no.
24" is 1920x1200 size If you need a larger resolution/screen they go hand in hand to keep the DPI the same. 4k below 32 inch to me seems wrong.
You can get 32" screens with the same DPI as my 24 with a 2560x1440 resolution. For example this amav panel which is like an IPS. I've not used it.

Yes I will be doing so quite soon. I've raised my budget this weekend but as I've pretty much decided to go for a Dell IPS I may need a few more pennies. I'm not bothering with 4k, just QHD for this size.

Looks like this 2015 model which is in budget or this 2017 model which needs a few more pennies. A quick look has the newer model as consuming less power but I'm struggling to see any other major differences.

I'm sat here with my credit card trying to think of reasons not to click the trigger tonight but common sense is currently winning. Seeing as this will by far the most expensive purchase I've ever made for something that wasn't house, car or holiday related and it's taken 10 months to save for it, I'm going to have a last look around to make sure before committing.

The main thing I'm wondering is if there is any reason why the newer model is worth £160 a pair more than the older one?

Edited to add

Thinner bezel on the new one.

After a false start (original purchase was cancelled by seller due to a pricing error and they promptly put their price up by £70) I now have them. I went for the newer version with the thinner bezel.

I didn't check the current input/output combination and realised that my current graphics card has two DVI outputs/one HDMI whereas the new screens only have HDMI/display port so I'm currently just running one screen. crazy blush This isn't however a big deal as I was going to upgrade the card next anyway (it can't handle 2xQHD) so I've brought forward that purchase to tomorrow so will all be up and running at the weekend. Anyone want to buy a couple of 22" Iiyama HD monitors with added insect insect feature on one? laugh

Cracking pair of screens, thanks as always for the ideas and input.
