Or alternatively, what features are worth bothering about for a new monitor, for example screen type, brand, response speed or resolution.
A while ago (
actually nearly 18 months ago) I started thinking about getting new monitors for my PC due to the likes of
this 27" 1920x1080 at £180 becoming in reach budget wise. I had a think and as I already had a pair of 22" monitors at the same resolution I decided that I'd look for something better. This of course upped the budget significantly so I decided to hang fire, start slimming down the record collection on Ebay and call the budget £800 for a pair of monitors. This now brings me back to the title question as I've now emptied 2 boxes of vinyl that have sat idle in the garage and spent our entire 6 years at the last house in the loft and my mouse finger is getting itchy....
At the top end of my budget is a
UHD 27" IPS display for ~£395. Is it worth the extra to get IPS and the higher resolution? I work from home for a lot of the week so having something easy on the eye is important. I don't really bother with PC games so response time isn't that much of a priority. I like having two monitors as it means I can quickly shift 4/8 applications around with shortcuts. Soooo....
Q1 Is IPS worth paying extra for?If not then this
non-IPS Samsung @ ~£345 will do fine. If I'm going to be spending this much then I'd like something that I'll be happy to keep for a while (which I appreciate is not a given in the computer environment) but is the resolution so important which brings me to...
Q2 Is resolution important in my case? My working day typically involves standard office fare such as spreadsheets, I do a bit of programming and a bit of 3D CAD on the side. If I drop the UHD criteria then the budget drops to the middle ground of either
this 2560x1440 IPS @ ~£315 or this
2560x1440 non-IPS Iiyama @~£295. I've always like Iiyama as a monitor brand but that dates back to using them for CRT CAD monitors years ago so I'm not sure if that loyalty is justified nowadays. My current monitors are Iiyama ones but does this matter? I tend to avoid the likes of BenQ who I perceive as "budget".. Is this brand loyalty/prejudice relevant nowadays? Back in the days of CRT CAD monitors it was down to the actual tube manufacturers of whom there weren't that many (3 IIRC).
Q3 Which brands are good or is this irrelevant? Finally, I've used twin monitors at work and home for around twenty years so it would be quite difficult to get me out of the habit but if I can be convinced then either
34" flat thingy @~£530 or
34" curved thingy @£~650 could be options.
I appreciate that my timing (i.e. just before the forum moves) is questionable but thought I'd get my thoughts down on paper (?) tonight. As always, any suggestions are more than welcome. I should probably add that I'm leaning towards display port as an interface, I don't need speakers but a thin bezel and height adjust would be nice.
