flying up tomorrow to look at this one-its less than half the cost of a train and 4 hours quicker believe it or not. Not looking like any cambelt history so if everything else in order that would still be a concern. In that scenario the drive back could be interesting- any advice on potential signs or sounds that one or several of the belts might be about to let go?

A word of caution (unnecessary perhaps given your recent experience) - you can always walk away if you suspect the seller is not being on the level, but with luck that won't be the case.

Someone on here should have some handy tips on what to watch out for when driving it - you'll have had your checklist with you when inspecting it and of course you'll have a test drive

Squeals from belts would be worth listening for and I think looking at the belt surface for cracks.....

If you buy the car but unhappy about the cambelt then DONT drive it.
Get it done local or collected and delivered to your chosen workshop.

After a 23hr round trip involving the bumpiest plane landing ever and scenes of M6 Motorway carnage on the trip home I am now the proud owner of a 1998 Porto Blue 20v Coupe!

Car isn't perfect bodywork wise but wasn't portrayed as such and appears genuine as did the owner- and yes was allowed to poke and prod car as much as I liked and good half hour test drive.No nasty surprises underneath or at the seams.

No cambelt history so peeled back the cover and had a look, and other belts appeared ok so chanced it and drove it back at a sedate pace through stormy weather and some serious accidents which had SCIU attendance at.

Oil pressure and water temp all good so next step will be give it a good clean and polish and get a few pics on here- oh and get it across to Midlands Car Servicing to give it a good going over and change the belts!!

Here are a few pics I took before she went off to visit JBT to have some 'rust issues' sorted out. She looks good on top and interior is mint but there are a few corrosion problems lurking in what I have come to learn are the usual places.

Have set up a project post and will be starting to post images of the before and after pics from middle of May as the work progresses.

Hmm, I've never used flickr for hosting pics, only photobucket. Mucking around with adding "jpeg" or subtracting in/dateposted/public seems to make no difference.

Anyone else got an idea how to make these work?

They really don't want you to easily find a direct link, but if you go to the photostream gallery and click the "download" link then right click the "original" link and click "copy link address" you can get a direct link to each jpg file to paste into the "imgpop" link here.

TBH it was a good low mileage engine that was my main priority as I figured that any bodywork issues could be easily repaired, albeit costing a few bob to sort...

Reminds my of my old Porto.
